OK, so after several EBAY disasters I got my heads! After reading the instructions (don't tel my wife!) and they talked about drilling "steam holes" into the block to access water jacket! Anyone do this? I believe my block is a 71. They said late models do not need this done, Somehow I don't think they view a 71 as a late model. Thoughts???? Also, what plugs can I get locally for these heads? What are you guys running?
What's your compression going to be? I run 3924 Autolites in mine Scotty. My block is a 1968 and I didn't drill any holes. Would't mind having a look at those instructions. I don't remember anything like that with mine, but then I really don't remember any instructions.
Call up Eddlebrock. I'm sure they have a tech line but if not, I'm sure they would be willing to help anyway they can.
3924's work great...clears everything. Be forewarned...if your heads are the later style with deeper spark plug location, they will hit the piston domes with those plugs and TRW L2249NF dome pistons. Works great with flat tops though! You can use either the 3924, 3933 (race plug) or Motorcraft AGSP32C...which I believe is made for 2.0 4 cylinder....but they work! They're all 5/8 head 3/4" reach, but the 3933 is a little colder (race plug of course). Oh...and no, you don't have to drill the steam holes. Works just fine without them.
Thanks all. Have flat top pistons so no ussue there. Looking forward to "feeling" the new heads in the seat of my pants! I will not drill any holes, seems odd. I will post the instruction sheet scan after I leave the office..Great weekend all...
My block is a 71 also. I was going to install Tricks and went ahead and drilled the block steam holes (3/16's). Then decided on different heads (Jeg's) and didn't need to drill the holes because the Jeg's heads do not have the corresponding holes. So check your heads first...drill the block only if the heads have the steam holes. Otherwise just skip it.
edelbrock told me to use champions. can't remember which ones offhand. car ran so lean at the et finals in bakersfield i burnt the electrode right off the #1 plug. was told to try an autolite AR3910. they run great, but the car is a track only car. not sure how they'd do on the street.
Im pretty sure head gaskets have the holes in them, so I believe you use the gasket as a template. Im still not sure why you would have to do this though...
There is three 3/16" holes (intake side) on the head gasket for each cylinder, the older block and heads use the center hole, newer heads use one of the other holes ,so with your heads off put a head gasket on block and see what hole it uses (old block center hole) then take the head gasket and put it on the head and see what steam hole it uses, it needs to be the same as the block if not you got to drill the 8 holes (some after market heads can use either holes). You can do this with engine in car but is tricky, need to wipe down block gasket surface with MEK or other solvent and tape up cylinders and intake valley so no metal chips get in (I found that aluminium duct tape works good) also have someone hold a vacuum at each hole while you are drilling, make sure to deburr the holes, DOUBLE CHECK you are drilling the correct holes (right or left of center hole) and take your time !!! one more thing you can use a 3/16" drill bit instead of 1/8" Hope this helps.
