well my gas tank is covered in rust, so i am goiing to take it off drain all the gas out (barely any) and then put a chain in it and shake the rust out from the inside. on the outside i will wire brush it untill its all metal and then paint it black with engine paint. i will also paint the metal straps along with it. 3 questions 1: will the gas lines have gas still in them? 2:do i have to put something in side of the gas tank to prevent leaking? 3: how does this setup sound?
A buddy of mine dropped the tank on his torino and used an angle grinder with sandpaper disk to strip all teh gunk off the tank and painted it with oil based rustioleum, to get the crap out of the inside of the tank, we removed teh sending unit and went to bass pro for a box of BB's we heard of motorcyclists draining adn shaking the tank with BB's to knock the rust and deposits out of their tanks, so 4,000 BB's later there we were shaking a tank in his back yard, yes the lines still had gas in them, but we jsut let it drop in the gravel, just don't light a cig or anything, hah... worked great, just was a bit akward shaking the crap out of that huge gas tank with two people. It can be done, and on his show car the blue tank stands out against the stainless straps... give it a shot and let me know how it works out for you! I've been thinking of building a tank cover for mine, just welding together a box that i can bolt to the frame rails to surround the tank for two reasons... i don't want to get rear-ended and end up like a pinto, and it would clean up the lines... only drawback is weight... the tank cover the torino had weighed in at about 120 lbs.. good thing i'm not racing mine eh'? Just a couple options for disguising that ugly tank... hope it helps

i used the Red-Kote inside and Rust Bullit outside. i also installed a drain plug at the same time. the chain works well...on my Harley tanks i put rocks inside, taped the holes up, wraped it in a blanket and put it in the dryer. (Effie wasn't home). ......
ok soo i un did the straps and there is a sensor on top of the gas tank, also how do i disconnect it from where you put in gas ? please help, also the rubber connector broke so i will have to replace that i have gas going everywhere
you shouldn't have a lot of gas going everywhere, unless you tried to drop your tank with a lot of gas in it, as for the sensor, i'm not too sure on the mav, but 73' gran torino has a disconnect for the gas guage sensor on the driver's side against the frame, comes down with the tank from there if i remember right
oo i got it now but now im covered in rust because im wire brushing "some"of the rust off and then i will paint it
I've sand blasted and powder coated several old gas tanks at work. They always come out nice, unless they had rust severe enough to pit the metal. Stink up the whole shop when you bake them out, though!
Don't paint the outside of the tank till you finish the inside first, take it to a rad shop and have it boiled out tomorrow, and remember, too much wire wheel = holes if your tank is in rough shape.
