Hello all, I have a 73 ford maverick straight 6 , I have had it for a year or so, my mother loved the car but sadly got cancer and passed away 4 short months later, so now i have decided to rebuild the maverick for her, paint it purple (her favorite color) and nickname her Ruth, which is my moms middle name she hated lol I bought the car for 200 bucks from a friend who thought it had a rod nock, so planned on dropping a different motor in it, one day i decided to try and she if it would start, with new fluids and a battery she started right up. what he heard was a lifter! I then wanted to then see if i could build that I-6 into something with some nice power, but didn't seem to be able to source the parts, I can get my hand on a ford 302 and have thought about going that way! What would it take to do a 302 swap? Thank you for reading my thread! looking forward to gaining a lot of knowledge for this forum

    Welcome to the forum ...

If you want to keep the six - for now or for a while, there's info available for simple repair and tuning needed to wake up the small block six. '73 with 5 lugs may be a 250 , auto or 3OTT ?. Interesting door damage and a missing fender still looks pretty good. ( my '74 has kinda' similar paint ! )

Definitely do the V-8 swap. All of the information is here on this forum. That car looks to have lots of potential...

IF 5th digit in VIN is a "L" it has the 250, also those have a low mounted starter. Meaning it has the 302 bell housing, 200 bell were smaller & starter is mounted 3/5 way up on block.

Thank you for that information, i just looked at the Vin and in fact the 5th digit is a "L"!, The Starter is located under the exhaust pipe coming from the header. if that makes sense!

Since you have the 250, you won't have to change the front springs, as they are the same as installed with the 302...
