Maverick Resto Update....

B-O-N-D-O and bondo was its name-o. Just bustin' yer chops man:evilsmile . Progress rules!! I know, I'm jealous .

 

I don't know how much money, or how much power your looking to get out of your motor. But the best heads you can get for a SBF are AFR 165's. They can support up to 337cubic inches, with out a problem. And make a lot of power, and flow very well on both the intake and exhust sides. I've seen an article where 400hp was made (at the fly wheel) on a stock cam with using AFR 165's. They're about 1400 bucks though. But they're what I'm going to put on my new motor. I went with forged probe flat top pistons, balanced, had the block decked, honed, and bored .40 over.

 

actually, I questioned them about that. They have this tool they use, it's a handle with a stem at the end. Squeeze the end, it puts a weld, pull, and out comes the ding. They're doing metal work, and lots of it. If you look at the old pics I had in that previous thread, you'll see the 1/4 panel scrunched at the dr tail piece, I checked that out today, and they pulled all of that out, I don't know how, it was folded like a taco, and I looked at it from the inside, and they straightened it out like I couldn't even tell.

the bondo you see there is not bondo, it's a new type of filler that better, and, it hasn't been sanded yet, the actual amount that is going to be on the car is literally going to be micro thin. I'm impressed with the bodywork to date, and happy they are pulling and fixing the dings and waves, NOT bondoing them.

My good buddy runs afr 165's on his 89 stang. I'm VERY well knowledgeable about what they can do. he's running n/a times of low to mid 12's, and putting 321 at the wheels.

However, that's what MY stang is for, so I can beat the crap out of, not the mav. I want to keep the mav at 275-300 horse at the wheels TOPS, and these gt40p heads should do a good job of that, as if I don't want a race car, way too much sentimentality involved in this car to be thrashing it like that.

without going into the advance in chemistry, i can tell you the filler they are using is stronger than lead, almost comparable to steel when dried. of course the thinner the layer used of any filler the better. it is a little more costly than bondo, but you get what you pay for. lead is no longer the way to go, cost alone will kill you never mind the safety of use and weight. if you watch the body finalization stages of most of the shows like overhaulin you will see them covering the whole car with some kind of filler in a thin layer and sanding it down.

 

Sierra, thanks for the post, for it's not often that pictures of a full blown resto pop up live as they are going, step by step, and many don't know what's involved.

I'm sincerly confident, and am proud of the bodywork this shop is doing. I saw the 1/4 panel that was crunched like a taco, it had been pulled and staightened, and looked fabulous.

Sounds like he was a little insulted. I guess true bondo shops give respectable shops like his, a bad name.

 

wow, Jeremy dont take offense to my prior post, like I said , "just bustin yer chops". I understand the process in which your car is undergoing and I too have seen many of the "greats" do a skim coat on t.v.. Just a little ribbing, dude. Not a day goes by that someone asks me "hows the pinto coming". Its all in fun. Sorry man, didnt mean to hurt anybodys feelings.
