I see that there are different weighted flywheels for Ford 302 engines with a manual transmission - anywhere from 0 oz to 50 oz - is this more of a balance issue. Can anyone explain? Which is correct for a 1973 302 engine?
    Thanks - Dan

I've forgotten the exact year (late '70's - early '80's), but Ford switched from 28 oz. imbalance to 50 oz. imbalance for 302's. All 289's were 28 oz. and I'm pretty sure I've read that all 351 Windsors were, as well. Your's is 28 oz. imbalance. I don't know the reason for the change from 28 oz. to 50 oz. imbalance. Anybody out there got the skinny ?

The motors with the 5L HO designation, 82 up, went to 50 oz balance and also needs the correct front damper. This applies to both man and auto trans. If the 28 oz spec flywheel is used on a 50 oz motor, you will experiecne severe shake and also the other way around.
The fire order changed to a 351 order for the HO engines. The non HO engines are still the old 302 fire order. When planning a swap, take these things and the drive belt differences into consideration.
