If power steering is installed but not working, you are not only turning the wheels but forcing against the non-moving steering fluid. So NO. It is MUCH harder to steer manually if the power system is still hooked up.

I use manual with a small 13" steering wheel and a mini spool, and it isn't too bad. The young chick that does my annual inspection never had any problem with it either.

i have manual steering on my 71' with no problems. less crap in the way under the hood and one less belt=a few more ponies. i just wouldn't recommend trying to parallel park.:Dbeen driving mine with manual steering for a long time and no issues yet! Also as said before, you will like the feeling of it.

I went manual but kept the power steering gear box. No problems steering it. A manual box would be nice, but not necessary.

I kept my power box (in the attic), but still using the manual box. I am not sure I would like to drive this with a 13" steering wheel and a power box. Maybe after I get a bigger steering wheel, I might have a little extra torque and feel like I could live with the power box, but with this small steeering wheel, it can be a hassle at times.

The manual box is a bit of work, I have to admit. Not a problem on the highway, but getting into and out of the garage takes quite a few turns to maneuver it.

Never tried parallel parking. I cannot imagine how bad that would be, with manual, manual box, and spool.:(

What you have now is about the same effort as a power box with a larger wheel. A switch to a larger wheel with the manual box would almost seem like power steering.:thumbs2:

Simple to do if you have no exhaust system or a 6 banger...If you have long tube headers...All bets are off.
