I've got gas...

    ...now if I could just keep it in the engine... I just rebuilt my Motorcraft 2100 carb and now it leaks fuel (or more accurately, shoots fuel) out of the bowl vents at the top of the carb. What's my problem? Am I just a moron? I adjusted everything as per the directions included with the kit. HELP! :confused:

    Maybe you should have installed the needles?

    That isn't meant to be a smart @$$ remark - it is just the first thing that came to mind. The fuel to the carb is not shutting down and the inlet needles shut off fuel flow when the float rises. The only other cause that I can think of is heavy floats (leaking or soaked).

    since i dont know carbs my suggestion to you is go buy a new one

    The needles are installed. I can check the float again but it seemed to be in good condition when I put it in. Oh, and yeah, I'd LOVE to get a new carb, but the funds just aren't there. And it's my understanding that the 2100 is a decent model.

    Float is way too high, needles have crap stuck in them, or fuel pressure is too high.
    It is doubtful that you are a moron. These things happen.

    It's easy to have one of these things be significantly out of adjustment and have it do what you're describing. Sometimes they can be a bear to get right.


    What's was funny was that my son, who's a tech at a Chrysler/Jeep dealer, told me that one of the older techs was rebuilding a carb and all the other techs were standing and watching him because most of the younger guys had never seen a carb torn down before.

    You've got a lot of company out there.

    So very true, so many new techs have never worked on older stuff, most modern day mechanics don't have a hope in hell on fixing a carb. I'm very lucky to know a great mechanic who is an expert with carbs. He builds carbs for 10sec cars and even helped a guy tune his carb who broke a record for superstock, he also owns his own 9sec car.

    Finally had a chance to look at it today and got it working properly. Turns out I hadn't secured the float retainer - dummy me :slap: so the float wasn't having any effect at all, and the fuel was just spilling out over the bowl. Thanks to everyone for your advice, it's great to have it running again.
