my mav died a couple weeks ago because gas wasnt getting to the carb, i replaced the fuel pump n now gas gets to the carb, but it still wont start. It starts with starting fluid but dies after 5 or 10 seconds. its about 25 degrees outside at all times here right now. Any ideas on how to fix it?
I'd siphen all the gas out. The bad gas will probably have a 'peculiar' odor to it. Put new gas in and run it for a while. I've run into that a few times over the years (even down here in the south). I'd also remove the fuel line at the carb and shoot some compressed air (low pressure) through the lines to make sure they aren't clogged (for whatever reason). Even if it doesn't solve the problem, you've eliminated one possibility. (general question to the Yanks): Do ya'll put a bottle de-icer in every tank of fuel up there during winter. )
i know the lines arent clogged because i can see gas spraying out of the carburetor wen it wont start up. i know it has spark. ill try syphoning the gas and putting new stuff in. any other ideas on what it could be?
gas spraying???? Just wondering.. while you are cranking the engine there is gas spraying.. or.. when you are pumping the gas peddle, gas is spraying??? cuz if it's spraying all the time your engine is flooded.. in that case change the needle valve in the carb..hopefully that fixes it..
its spraying when the gas peddle is down sorry i forgot to specify that, thats how i have to start the engine wen its cold.
try this first!!! before you go syphoning the gas from the tank, try starting the car with starting fluid.(since that is working) Then, once the car is running drip gasoline into the carb and see if it will keep running like that. ( be careful ) if it does stay running then my money is with the other responses, bad gas... I would have said a clogged Idle circuit but if your accelerator pump is squirting that would be more than enough to keep the car running. ( If you pump it ) Just out of curiosity, what engine, carb, etc. are you running??
engine is a stock 250 straight 6, no heat riser tube, choke doesnt always work, major exhaust leak things like that.
I dont recomend this at all. I had an uncle who ended up in a burn center for months because of something like this. Best bet is get a gallon can of fresh gas and a couple feet of fuel hose. Disconnect the hose from the pump to the tank. Hook up the gallon can as a temporary gas tank and try it. At least that will tell you if its a fuel problem.
thanks mav.. Mav is right on how dangerous that is.. I shouldn't have suggested that.. I have a tendancy for shortcuts, but shouldn't tell people to do the same. If there is a timing problem it could backfire and cause a big fire.. I'm a little thanks for catching that one mav
Is it gas in the tank? I seem to remember somebody who will go un named down here puttin diesel in by mistake, Then changed out the engine because they thought it was blown, then the new engine wouldn't run either........untill they drained out the diesel/gas mix.....
but be careful of back fires.. a freind did this and it fired up through the carb while he was pouring gas down in the carb.. and the stream of gas caught on fire and the gas container did as well.. it wasnot pretty from what i heard... use a small container to keep any problems small good luck
