This is my first post so bare with me,TY. I am getting ready to purchase a Comet/Maverick. I want a year that has the five lugs. Other than that im not to picky. I want to fix it up to new car standard. I really want a 300 inline 6 or v6 if v6 would not be a major project. I have an old 289 from a mustang but i want fuel economy. I will appreciate any suggestions or tips you guys have. Also would the 289 be fuel effecient enough or would i be better off with a 6. also like to know what gearing i need for mainly highway use and maybe tow a small pop up camper. Thank you all. Richy
Welcome! I have a 200 I6 in mine and I get 21 MPG on the highway at 65 MPH. I have a 2.79 :1 rear, which is great on the highway. Tall 205 75 R14 tires.. It is the lowest ratio available more or less. If you ride the freeways a lot you dont want higher. A 300 wont fit under the hood. The V8's get less MPG but have twice or more HP. The 6's have torque where a hwy car wants them....under 3000 RPM. The 289 is the same as the 302 weight wise I believe... The I6 to V8 conversion aint no picnic, so think about a v8 car if you are going that route. Fuel tank is ofset on the 6's lighter suspension....etc. I kept my Comet a six and bought a different car for my big block V8 thrills...
