I am converting a 74 to a 70 (ie small bumpers, valences, etc). I do NOT want to notch my fenders and am thinking about taking the old rubber front stone guard and notching it to fit the new configuration. Anyone done this? How did it work? Otherwise, I may make a fiberglass stone guard, that won't flap in the wind. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dan notched his stone guard but he had a metal one. Your rubber one would probably work if you cut a piece of sheet metal and epoxy it to the underside to make it rigid.

I was thinking about using my old 77 rubber stone guard myself when I did my bumper swap. It did'nt look correct. I ended up notching the 70-72 steel stone guard. All you have to cut off the steel guard is a U-shaped knotch that will allow it to wrap around the fender. Also the steel guard has a ridge on top that follows the contour of the 70-72 bumpers. Don't knotch your fender, knotch the stone guard instead.

If you look under your current plastic part, there is a sheet metal 'skeleton' for it.
Take the plastic off, prime and paint the steel piece and use it by itself.
