Car started making a grinding sound and wouldn't start this morning at all. Took off the starter and first thing I saw the flywheel was chewed up on the teeth. So I assume I am having to pull the motor and transmission to repair? The part is cheap enough 17 bucks, already had starter hadn't put the new one on yet. At this point, if I have to pull the transmission and motor... which isn't a fast or easy job..lol I don't know that I want to deal with it right now. Wondering what the next step is...
The transmission will have to come out, not the engine. If you're working under the car on jack stands, like me, its not a lot of fun and it would be a day's work for me. You'll need tall jack stands. A transmission jack and/or a helper would be very desireable. The process is different depending on which transmission you have, auto or manual. Depending on your exhaust system, it may have to come down. Judging from your questions, you might be better off hiring it done unless you're looking for a learning experience. If you do it yourself, you might want to pick up some bolts and make a pair of pins to install temporarily and guide the transmission into place. Cut the heads off the bolts, bevel the ends and cut a slot in the end for a flat-bladed screw driver. They're very helpful in getting the transmission lined up and into place. If you do it yourself, and you don't have one already, pick up a Chilton's or Ford shop manuals to get the detailed instructions.
Yeah exhaust pipe just put on is a welded one piece. Automatic c3. I am trying to sell off some stuff to pay to have it done. I was reading up much of a pain it is without the right equipment... no fun. Wish I had a car lift and transmission stand for that matter. Do have a engine hoist and engine stand and some stands though...we shall see. I wasn't sure on having to pull the engine so thats good to know. At this point, wondering if I should park the car, and save up for a new tranny and motor and start doing the body work instead. Would have to find another ride for the summer at least. Love the pic of the lift and stand! Now thats what I am wish I had, 3k plus for a lift and stand... 800ish? I know the lift cost not sure how much a transmission stand is though.
my lift was $1700 installed...the transmission jack...free...it had a leaking seal so the shop gave it to me. they told me of a place that repairs them. I took the cyl. there and the guy fixed it...free... I handed him a $20 tip but he wouldn't take it...:Handshake
Awesome deal $1700 installed! And free stand..can't beat that. Amazing that the guy fixed it for free, and refused to take the $20 dollar tip. I am starting to think I should move to the south. Sure its muggy there, compared to here and seems rust eats cars even faster..but the people are awesome down that way.
I should mention, that while i would love a lift...I don't even own a garage, so there is that issue too. I live in a apartment..lol
