I'm swapping the original 302 for an '88 302 roller engine in my '72 Maverick. Roller block is back from the machine shop and I'm starting to swap parts from the original to the roller. Will use the earlier timing cover, dip stick, mechanical fuel pump, etc. But, I'm having a problem and need a fact check. I think I have to swap the pin in the end of the cam so it will catch the fuel pump eccentric. Think the pin in the roller cam is shorter 'cause it had no eccentric, right? Got to use the longer pin from the '72 302. The pin in the '72 cam came out easily but the one in the roller cam is stuck in. I've tried wiggling it with needle nose, tapping it with a brass hammer, and doing both at the same time. Hasn't budged. If I DO need to swap the pins, anyone got a trick for getting the old pin out. Appreciate any suggestions.
maverick maniac and i had this broblem also.. but we didnt have a roller motor i cannot remember what we did???? cant remeber what he said about it but it may have gone in to far???? dont quote me on this can ya get some vice grips or something????
You'll need an eccentric for a roller cam-the flat tappet cam one won't work. Get one for an '85 GT, or I believe there is an aftermarket piece available now for carbed roller motors.
Ok, so I used the wrong pin I guess(the one already in the B303 I got used). Every old eccentric I had wouldn't work,so I just used one from an '85.
The two piece eccentric has a steel tab bent out that engages the hole in the timing gear. So no pin is necessary to drive the eccentric.The short roller cam pin's only function then, is to drive the cam timing gear. If you want to use the solid iron eccentric, then yes, you need a longer drive pin.
I have the '72 302 eccentric. It one piece. So, should I look for an eccentric for an '85 carbed roller engine or a 2-piece '70s 302 eccentric? I looked on JEGS, Summit, Comp Cams and Rock Auto and didn't see anything that looked different than what I have. Anyone have a link to the part I need? Thanks for your help.
If you can get the roller pin out and get a longer pin, then use the one piece. If not then the easiest fix is to use a 2 pc eccentric.
Found it!!!!! I looked for the 2-piece eccentric at CarQuest, Advance, JEGS, Summit, RockAuto, Comp Cams, Holcomb, ... and even the Ford dealer. NONE sell the complete eccentric. Complete part is discontinued by Ford, they only sell the outer piece. Others had nothing. I had an idea the Ford piece would be expensive. Fortunately, they were discontinued so I kept looking and found the eBay item. My plan B was to cut a piece from the '72 pin that would insert into the cam sprocket, end-to-end with the pin in the cam, and extend into the 1-piece eccentric. Probably would need a longer bolt. But, a guy on another forum said the one-piece would have to be narrowed to avoid hitting the timing cover. Glad I didn't have to test that assertion. Don't have any good way to narrow the 1-piece uniformly.
On mine I used the 1-piece eccentric with the later roller cam timing set, had to mill .100" of the face of the cam sprocket. At this point I like to bench assemble the cam w/pin, retainer, sprocket and cam bolt/washer. It's easy to measure the cam end play with some feeler gauges and check the pin for proper length. In my case the hole in the cam was drilled too deep and I had to pull the pin out and add shim stock behind the pin to get the correct engagement into the sprocket.
Your plan would work, provided you put the cut piece in first behind the pin. I did this on one of my engines. And you may or may not have needed a longer bolt. Don't recall if mine did. The roller cam bolt is pretty long to start with. As for the thickness of the 1 piece eccentric, Ford made two different ones, one thick, one thin. Use the thin one. I've got a box of em, if you need one I'll look and see if I still have a thin one.
Well, I don't need it now, assuming the $16 eBay 2-piece is a quality part. But, its good to know the thinner 1-piece exists. I'll get back with you if the eBay part gives me a problem. Thanks. YOu guys have provided some good poop on issues and options with the fuel pump eccentric when swapping a carburatd roller motor into a Maverick. Might be helpful if this info were added to the Forum's Tech Article on swapping in a roller motor. Not sure of the best way to do that.
The tab on my eccentric broke off when I put a roller in my Comet. I welded in a piece of round stock in it's place, stronger than the tab.
