OK,I know the whole Maverick world is waiting for my results.I took the grill emblem home and compared the diameter of the 2 inserts. They looked the same so I put the cap on a soft clean rag and drilled out the 3 steel pins and it came apart just the way I planned it.I took the grill insert and it is a perfect fit. I rushed into the house to show my wife the masterpiece and noticed thar the grill emblem(clear piece and steer head is one piece, will not separate) has the word: "Maverick" in a semi -circle across the top and the cap insert just has the steer head.Still it looks factory,I think I even like the maverick name there. If your cap is cracked you might consider this. The grill emblems are a lot easier to find!

Yes I will post a picture when it is finished.I took it to work today to try an ease-out on the pin shanks but that didn't work so I just drilled them out. I will work on it tomorrow(during break of course) but it is coming along great! I may need help posting the picture,I e-mailed some pictures to my State Rep, Doug ,of the Fun Ford weekend a couple of weeks ago and he posted them on the other discussion board for me so I've never posted a picture myself.Keep watching for it!

Ok, the first one worked, now for the 2nd one,I took several pictures but couldn't keep the reflections from showing on the chrome, the emblem from the grill doesn't have a locating tab at the bottom so make sure the emblem is were it needs to be before you bond it in. The picture didn't turn out good but trust me it looks great!

That looks really good!!! I really like it! I have a gas emblem with a crack down the center as well, and a couple of good grill emblems. Think I might do that too one of these days.

    Tip

Heres a tip for anyone trying to ( semi) restore a gascap or grill emblem

My grill emblem had two chips and lots of deep scraches in it

For scraches or scuffs or minor chips... I took my grill emblem and sanded it with fine grit sandpaper ( Yes sand paper)

I took about 1/8 " of the plastic off the top with sandpaper... Then i mounted my electric buffer/polisher in a vise and using rubbing compound i polished the plastic smooth... same principal as color sanding a paint job ... After re-chroming the ring around the emblem ( cost $12.00) it looks as good as new ... ( better than the outta sight prices on ebeay for another )

    Just my two cents ...

The grill emblem is about 1/10 of an inch thinner than the cap emblem but is the same diameter. The only problem this causes is a round cork gasket that goes behind the emblem and seals against the back plate will need to be a little thicker, I just cut out another gasket out of cork and bonded it on top of the other one. This worked great and is important to keep gas from possibly getting to the emblem. The only other problem area is the cap emblem has a small locating tab that lines up in a grove in the cap so the emblem will be sitting level when it is installed. The grill emblem does not have this locating tab, just make sure the new emblem is sitting in the cap right before you bond it.(the steer's nose needs to be lined up with the grove which is at the bottom of cap when it is on the car).If you ever build model cars when you were a kid then you should have no problems doing this.
