Hello everyone, Just recently rebuilt my carb and fixed the float "level" and "drop", and she ran like a charm, but the top of the carb had to come off once more, where we saw that the gas was dirty again. Now I have taken the gas tank down and emptied it out...(It was very dirty) but it's also very rusty, and I'm wondering if any of you know what to do to clean it out, or if I might as well buy a new one. If possible, I'd rather clean the thing out, I was thinking about using a water hose, but I don't like the fact of water entering the tank. Any ideas? Also, before I took the tank out, my fuel hand didn't work...any ideas on what might fix that problem? Thanks, Matthew
there are lots of threads on here about cleaning and resealing gas tankes. try searching rusty gas tank. usually involve puting in some chain or gravel in the tank the moving the tank around shakeing it to kinda scrape the rust and crud loose from the inside. then por15 has a fuel tank coating that you can apply. or you can get a new replacemnt tank.
There are also a lot of threads about replacing the stock tank with either a new stock Maverick tank or an larger Mustang tank. The Mustang tank kits with new sending units run between $100-$200 depending on what you want, plus you get a couple extra gallons. Personally I will replace mine when that time comes. Check the tech articles section with some write ups on the swap.
I did the $80 band-aid once before. It lasted 2 years before the lining clogged the carburetor. For another $30 or so it could've been a replace it and forget it for another 35-40 years
