I have been parting out a 70 Cougar and by decoding all the numbers and stuff it says it has a 9inch 3.25 traction lock rearnend. By looking at it it appears not to have been changed. Is there any casting numbers on the rearend to verify what it is? Or do I have to take it all apart to find out? Thanks for your help [/size][/font]

Any help is appreciated. [size=+1]A:[/size]Take a piece of chalk and mark a line from the driveshaft yoke up to and on the differential housing. without moving the tire pick a reference spot on the car body near the rear tire (a screw or bolt, etc.) and mark the tire at this reference spot. Now, slowly rotate the tire while counting the number of times the drive shaft rotates past its' reference mark. The rear gear ratio is the number of times the drive shaft rotates divided by the number of rotations the wheel rotates. example: drive shaft: 17, tire: 5... 17/5=3.4 so the rear gear ratio is 3.4:1. The factory attached a metal tag under one of the center section bolts. Good luck though as many where discarded if the rearend was ever serviced. The casting numbers numbers on the center section are inside which won't help you.
