Hoping someone might help out! Transmission was working perfectly but with only a 2600stall converter...bought a new 3500 stall and had a local shop install it for me as I did not wish to do the floor jack thing! Now it starts up fine but when I put it into any gear I hear what sounds like a rapid "clicking" sort of sound and no motion in any gear! It will not stop the noise no matter where I put the shifter until I turn off the engine. Replaced the flexplate also and it seems to have a noticeable vibration...not good. Its still at the shop. I hope its not toast! Any ideas? Kinda depressed right now....
Take this for what it's worth...I've never done it...but I've been told by those who have that Frank is correct...that this is what will happen if the converter is not seated. I've also been told by very reputable transmission dealers, as well as converter manufacturers, that it normally wipes the pump out before it even fills the converter with fluid. Sounds like the shop will be replacing your trans and converter. I'm sure that's not what you want to hear...but it is what it is. I recently had some major trans issues, and talked to all of the above lol. Mine turned out to be an incorrectly modified valve body. They had me worried that I may have destroyed a brand new $1000 converter Just my 2 cents...and that may be what the info is worth...
Was it like that when you drove it home from the shop or did it happen later? If it was installed with the converter not seated it should not have worked at all. If it happened later it my be that the the line pressure relief valve became unseated or the pump gears may have broken due to other things.
Took it out today..and found out that I have a 24 spline output and a 26 spline converter! Everything seems to be ok..pump was working as converter was full. I bought the converter that was in it about 12 years ago from a guy who ordered a 26 spline when he had a 24 trans...I sent my trans out to get rebuilt(was a 26 spline unit) and had it fail on me 3 times in about a month(servo cover twice and front seal let loose last time). It also shifted way way to hard...slicks would slip going into second gear! I took it back and told them how unhappy I was and to fix it good! Told them I wanted more stall also...next day I picked it up and it has been absolutly perfect since then...never skipped a beat in 12+years! I think they gave me a different Trans! Now it makes sense...the stripped starter bolts when the starter went a year later...was wondering how that happened when they were fine before! How hard is it to swap to a 26 spline unit...I just bought this converter for $560 and feel I should use it! What would a trans shop charge to do this?
It shouldn't be any more than they charged you to drop the trans to install the new converter, and the cost of the shaft itself. You can do it yourself if you can remove the trans...the shaft simply slides out of the trans. Just get a correct input shaft, slide the old one out, and slide the new one in. Put the converter in and reinstall the trans. I'd pull the old shaft out to make sure the splines on the internal side of the trans were the same first...but as long as those match up, you should be good. Also...I'd check the splines very closely on the converter...the clicking was one or the other sets of splines being destroyed. There are also probably fine pieces of metal in the trans fluid and filter from the contact being made on the splines. Couldn't hurt to have the converter flushed either, just in case. I'd check it very closely before I just put it back in and ran it...but that's just me.
To switch from 24 to 26 spline converter you have to cange: 1. converter 2. input shaft 3. pump and stator support 4. forward clutch drum 5. Depending on the stator support you have you may have to change the direct clutch drum too
