Ok, my ignition finally gave out. When I put my key in it now it just locks up and refuses to go into the on or ACC mode. I plan on just putting in a push button start pretty soon, is there a way for me just to break the lock to get it to start? Also can anyone explain the wiring to me so I can hook it up to a switch?
I'm guessing this could also be due to the steering wheel lock not disengaging and therefore keeping the key from turning........how do I rip this out/disable this/get it the hell away from my car? I don't care about steering wheel locks, don't care about fancy key ignitions.......I just want my car to start!!!
I bet it is jammed. First...make sure the car is in PARK. Next...jerk the wheel back and forth as you try to turn the key. Hope this helps.
hehe, I fought with it for a long time before I posted here. I tried wrenching the wheel back and forth, I tried going through all of the gears, I put it in neutral and pushed it forward, then backward......it's jammed allright, but it's not comming unjammed and I need to resolve this RIGHT NOW! I need to be able to drive my car, if I have to get a drill and just drill the whole mess out I will, I just need to know what to do so that I can start my car!
If your steering wheel is unlocked, all you have to do is look on the right, top side of the column, under the dash. There is a rod than comes out of the top of the column and attaches to the ignition switch. I believe it is just a 90 degree bend going straight up through a hole in a shaft which goes into the switch. You can unbolt the switch, pull it straigh up off the rod, and let it hang down. Then you can manually operate the switch just by pushing in the shaft to the correct position. If your steering wheel is not unlocked, you'll have to pull the wheel and remove the locking pin. Then just remove the switch as described.
PULL THE WHEEL!!!!??? Please don't tell me that I don't have time for that. Please I need information soon, I need this car for work, I just need to get the steering wheel unlocked and hotwire the car!
I mean I have a dremel tool and some cutoff wheels and a power drill and stuff......is there anything I can get to that I can just cut or drill to free up the wheel? Then just wire up a push button starter or something?? Please guys I need to do something with this car right now!
Max; hammers cause more harm than good in a situation like this. Seems like a little patience and thought will save you a bit of money and a lot of frustration. But, as Frank said, too late. Hope it works out well. Good luck! Earl
Well in my experience with 70s things beatings tend to make them work. I remember as a child my dad hitting the TV and it would suddenly work. I tried that with a modern one, and it just broke it worse, haha. Anyway I'm converting my ignition to push button, so the fact that the lock is now broke is fine with me. I mean it looks fine, can't even tell I took a hammer to it, but now it's not locking up on me. As a kid my dad had lots of car like that, he'd buy them at auctions and stuff and they'd have no keys, so he'd just stick a screwdriver into the ignition and bust the lock. It's one of those old tricks that only works on older cars and can be a lifesaver. P.S. To whoever mentioned it.......I can't call a cab, can't afford that if I ever want to see mag wheels on my mav
