good luck finding one of those! Actually, I 've seen some on Ebay every once in a while, but they usuall seem to bring four figures for a rebuildable long-block.

Or, you could make your own (well sort of) from a set of 4v cleveland heads and a regular 302 with some mods.

Building your own is the way to go if cost is a concern. The manifold is the hardest thing to find although there is a site that sells adapters for regular 302 manifolds. The machine work to the heads is very straight forward. Just machine the cleveland water holes on the face for freeze plugs, then machine a hole on the intake side to match the intake you have.

Federal mogal still makes pistons for this set up but, they are hyperutectic's. You can also get the advantage of the smaller 2v heads, these's head still have large valves for a small engine, 2.04 intake and 1.65 exhaust. These pistons will net 9.00/1 compression with 76cc chamber heads.

The only difference in the blocks is the boss had 4 bolt mains, but with the later blocks you can run roller cams or what ever you want. Also with building your own you can use regular size 302 rods. I've even talked to coast high and they will make custom pistons to get higher compresion and 347 stroker parts.

I will say that alot of the aftermarket heads flow better than the cleveland heads 2v or 4v and are lighter. So making a street boss or buying a real boss has no power advantages over a good built 302.

They do look cool though....that's why I'm building one plus I have always wanted too :D

If you can't find one you can make a "Street Boss" The question is how much money you want to spend? 4bbl heads are not way to go. Ports are to big. Go with 2bbl heads and use a 347 stroker kit. Custom pistons with good rods. When it comes to someone saying "a company can make you custom pistons" dah. Any pistons manufacturer can do that. Just a matter of money. You can also get a titinuam crank made to if you're on the same budget as NASA. You can find the 4 bolt main blocks or make your own or use a gridle. The manifold use to be made by Edlebrock in the old days. But you can always make a sheetmetal one or get a tunnel ram bottom piece and adapt it. The Boss 302 not only had 4 bolt mains but screw in core plugs. That was always the easy way to spot one. For headers use the Boss 302 69-70 Stang ones. There was also a manifold manufacturer in Arkansas that made the Street Boss manifold.

Coast High performace was only adding $200.00 to the price of their stroker kit for these pistons. Most company's that make custom piston cost around $700, so $200.00 sound pretty cheap to me.

I have never seen the edelbrock boss intakes, I have seen wieland tunnel rams, roush single plane high rise, B&A street boss performance dual plane (the one I'm using), B&A track boss single plane, stock boss dual plane, and some trans am racing intakes. Most of these manifolds are going for around $400 exept for the trans am's. B&A in Arkansas went out of bussness and sold there manifolds to bush performance they made them for awhile then stoped I just read in last months ford magazine that they are making them again, although I have not verified this. As I said before there is a manufacture that makes adapter for the use of any 302 intake, so you could even make it EFI if you want.

You cannot use mustang headers they do not fit a maverick unless you modify them. I bought a set of hooker super comps they did not fit my maverick and I have no shock towers. In the mustang there is more room aft of the engine than the maverick and the floor pan has a different shape at the leading edge. The frame rails are wider too. On the right side the header hit the frame (could be dented to work) and on the left one tube hit the fire wall hard must be cut. If you have the car lowered at all the collector will scrap, they hange 5" lower than the front frame rails.

So far I have about a 2 years worth the research and collecting parts to make the street boss as cheap as I can. I have done all the machine work myself to date, and I am using 351c pistons. The compression height is very close to the stock 302's I believe it was .026 higher. I have had to do some machine work to the pistons (because I am using domed pistons) to fit the contour of the 2v's open chambers better. I should have 11.2/1 compression I am using a 91 roller block and guess what it has screw in freeze plugs BTW they are in the ford racing catalog. Screw in freeze plugs have no real value in a street motor.

I am using a stock stroke scat nodular iron crank (not titanuim) and eagle 5.09 I beam rods with floating pins. :D

What else would you like to know, I have the answer's here in my book, building boss's for dummy's :D

Gee you can't use roller cams in Boss 302's? Didn't know that. And a racing block that has screw in core plugs, wow I'm shocked a racing part has that. You'd be surprised what parts are still out there for Boss 302s. Might even run acrosss a Cross Boss carb if you look hard enough. Or one of the forged steel cranks they used. And don't for get that Ford reduced the intake valve size in 70 Bosses because the air flow was to much.

No his point was he was using the late model roller block this way he can use production roller stuff........thus being cheaper......ya know he's not trying to be a smart a$$ he's just trying to give some useful information. have you ever thought of giving that a try:rolleyes:

    point is

If I haven't seen it or done it then it ain't so. I made a alum adapter I made that fits a 351W manifold on a 351W block with 2V Cleveland heads. Makes the manifold choice much more. Then I don't have to pay big bucks for a B&A manifold with only one choice.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to jump on me. In my first post I just gave information that I have run into building my street boss.

You can run rollers in a stock boss block but, it's easier and cheaper to use a late model block. Why buy a forged crank for a street car that's going to see 6500 rpm max. I have a 91 stock 5.0 block that I put screw in freeze plugs just for the heck of it. Here is the part number M-6026-B302 and they cost $8.95.

I'm sorry I didn't realize I was posting against the boss 302 king!!! I will bow down to you and let you put all the miss information you can about making street boss!!!

Sorry to everyone else that wants good information about making this engine.

    Humbly your servant Tom H

    heeey!

One of the greatest qualities this board has to offer is the absence of people that just hop on and spew rude critisism.
While it may be true that you have some experience with boss 302s, something tells me that if you were the worlds leading authority on these motors, you wouldn't be so quick to declare it.

First start on ebay, Boss 302s were put in Stangs and Cougars, both Ram air and non ram air. Only difference is the air cleaner itself. Unlike the 428/429 CJ & SCJs, Next, try all the Stang and Cougar club websites. Then search the Ford and other engine websites. In the long run it'll probably cost you at least $1500 for a hammered one. 69s had the bigger intake valves, 2.25" and 70s had the 2.19"s. Not really much difference there either. You might be cheaper and easier to make your own using 4v Cleveland heads or Boss 302 heads that show up for sale every now and then, starting at $500 appx. Pistons are still available but stroking it with custom pistons to a 347 would make the heads work better. 4 bolt mains, you can buy a SVO block or have one machined for you. Crank and rods, stroker kit would solve that. Have seen articles where Boss 302 owners did the stroke kit and liked it much more. The extra cubic inches made the heads more user friendly. Bigger 302 will also make the manifold tamer. There is factory ones and there is also aftermarket ones. If you call some of the Aftermarket people they still have the molds, just bring a tall stack of $$$$$$. Check out some of the old Trans Am clubs. That's what she was made for and they can help you too.
