    289 or 302?

Does anyone know how to tell the difference w/o taking of the starter and getting the block numbers?

PS have you guys checked under my avatar at the cars I own.

:hmmm: I really am not sure but I had a 67 mustang and when I changed the valve cover gaskets it was stamped 289, my 73 comet is stamped 302, those numbers coinsided.

Basically everything is identical between the 289 and the 302 aside from the crank and rods. if you get a 68 model 289 or 302, you'll be hard press to find out what it is as my cousin's 68 Fairlane with a 289 has 302 castings on the heads and block, but 289 crank and rods.

so, has the engine been rebuilt? If before 68, the casting number on the heads should be under the valve cover and say whether its a 289 or 302, don't remember casting numbers offhand. Same for the block casting under the starter. if its a 68, all I have to say is good luck. Rod and main bearings are interchangable, but if you need a crank, you will have to find out whether it is a 289 or 302 as the 289 rods will be too long for a 302 crank.

    All other parts are identical.

    years.

If it has stock intake and exhaust manifolds the casting numbers are visible. C3-c6(c7?) as the first two letters, your guaranteed a 289 as they didn't make 302's yet. First 302 in 68? Other than that, pull the starter or pull a plug and measure the stroke.

    An old trick

One little trick is on a 289 you can see the threads on the front intake bolts on either side of the intake where they bolt into the heads, on a 302 you can only see the hex part of the bolts only.
