I am thinking I can save a few dollars on some things and maybe end up with up grades.. It's from them and there are no other pieces on the car. Supposedly all went to another project. He also told me he can provide me with a polished rack if I remind him that I wanted one. What I am thinking is that maybe I can ask him to leave out the brake rotors and calipers, pads etc. and get them local and maybe Wilwood or something. Then I start feeling like I don't want to be shopping for all the pieces when I can get it all in one order..:confused: After doing allot of reading on the swap, I am thinking what I really need from these guys is the A arms. The rest can be found and pieced together.. But how long would that take and will I get the right part? In summary, I feel like to order the kit as he described in the email will cost more but will save allot of time. My best guess is that I could save as much as $500 but will still be in search mode for awhile..
All depends on what you want. Do you want better brakes? Do you need a polished rack? It's nice to get it all at once, then you're done, other than putting it all together. I wouldn't leave out the sway bar, but I might source my own brakes, and hoses.
I just used my 11 inch Granada rotors - the caliper brackets shown in the photo looks just like the ones I bought from Ebay that take GM Metric front calipers which are dirt cheap at a parts store along with the Granada rotors - my manual rack I bought later on also - it is about an inch or so too long but there are plenty of threads on each side to trim an equal amount on both sides - the rack drop bracket in the photo only because of the notch in the Canton pan on the Cleveland - I couldn't get the engine down enough that the last photo shows the Baer bump steer kit so the drop can be corrected
Get it all at once. I ended up with a crapload of junk parts that would not fit because the guy I bought it all from tried to get the parts from different dealers. I had the wrong A-arms, wrong springs, and a couple of other parts that were not compatible with the kit I had. Definitely get all the parts from the same supplier for the same kit, and do it once and save a bunch on shipping. I wasted several weeks during my project when I fought to make the wrong pieces work, then ordered and had to wait for the correct parts to ship.
I'm with you and wanting to do it the hard way and save some money but sometimes it just isn't worth the headache. Now that I said it I just wish I could stop myself from doing it the hard way.... Sound advice form a man with experience.
I see the logic in getting everything as a complete kit but just in my case I started out with just a cross member kit and a matching set of lower control arms - everything that I ordered from that point forward worked - I might have been one of the fortunate ones
Not bashing you but your experience with the mismatch stuff is what I think about all the time lol.. I have had enough of my own setbacks haha
Yea.. Just that one would think that I should be able to get the brakes almost anywhere.. But I see me getting the wrong bearings or that oddball brake hose lol..
If I remember correctly from Scooper's thread. In the end he spent almost exactly the same money piecing it all together as he would have had he just bough the kit all at once.
Im pretty much of the mindset of going w/ the kit. And possibly selling the parts that's being replaced. How much is your time worth is also something of consideration. Even w/ some kits, that's not to say there one be any issues, hopefully, vry few and easily resolved w the mfg...
I just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and someone was selling a new brake kit and was using the same kit I was using, so they were an exact fit. And, actually, my entire front end ended up costing MORE than if I had ordered the entire kit at once, and WAY more if you factor in all the shipping charges on all the various packages. Almost every time I tried to go another step forward, I found that I had another incompatible part, and I would have to order the compatible part and pay ANOTHER round of shipping. Now, if you want some parts, I have some I could sell. A-arms, springs, etc.... I just cannot guarantee that they will fit your kit, either.
go with the kit...I liked that all the bolts, brackets and misalliances pieces came with it...once the crossmember was in, just opened boxes and bolt it on...
Just placed the order.. $1939.96 That is for everything except the cross member. All parts now come painted. Sway bar, ss brake hoses, 11" drilled and slotted rotors and bigger calipers, shipping. They were in AZ and are now in Colorado.
