Ok so I put a 306 together to go in the new maverick. I threw it in my f100 so I could break it in and put a few miles on it to make sure everything was good and I'm having a heck of a time with it. Motor is mostly stock. Flat top pistons and a mild Erson cam ( 484 lift ) Performer 289 Intake and an edelbrock 600 It cranks up fine, idles fine, with no serious indicators of any trouble. No smoke, no odd noises, no valve train noise, etc etc etc It just doesn't seem to make any power. I've had a real fun time messing with timing and finally got it fairly close. I do suspect my distributor of being crap. I've pulled it several times and found the shaft to be tight on it. It randomly decides to be real stiff to turn some times and others loose. I put a vac gauge on the manifold yesterday and got 15-16hg at 850rpm idle warm. The gauge would bounce back and forth between the 15 to 16 hg fairly quickly. I did some research on that and from what I can see 15-16 with a mild cam is normal and the 1hg jumping is mostly likely from timing issues or timing missfires. Other than the lack luster performance I'm getting I don't really have any other indicators. Oil pressure is usually around 40 psi hot idle and havent heard anything out of the motor that would make me suspect something in particular. Hopefully I can grab up the right compression gauge fitting and do a compression check on all the cylinders ( hoping to god I don't have a problem there ). Any insight or tips would be extremely helpful. Thanks
I would definitely be changing that distributer out first and going from there - a tech once told me "if it appears to be crap - it's more than likely crap"
Hopefully I can get a new distributor in this weekend. Luckily I sold a buddy of mine a petronix dizzy with a Mallory hyfire box and coil for 60 bucks and he's willing to sell it back lmao.
Got a new ignition system in and it definitely made a big difference. I am however getting a high rpm buck under heavy acceleration. Around 4500 rpm and up with my foot in it....especially in 1st...the whole trucks bucks like its cutting in and out. Any idea?
could be running out of fuel. i would look for restrictions in the fuel lines. like crushed steel lines or kinks in the rubber fuel lines. then check for the fuel pick up filter sock to be clogged or disintegrating. if you have a fuel pressure test gauge, you can check it with that. install it and go drive and recreate the problem and see if the fuel pressure is keeping up. also what carb are you using? edelbrocks lock out the secondarys when the choke is even slightly on. ive seen this lock out not properly adjusted and cause cutting out. usually its around 3500 rpm.
I Have a manual choke edelbrock that the choke isn't hooked up on. Maybe that's causing it. Holley blue fuel pump regulated to 5.5 psi. New filters and lines.
if the choke is not secured into the open position it can easily close and lock out the secondarys. when looking at the throttle linkage you can move it and see the linkage that pulls the secondarys open. you will notice the lock out lever there. you should be able to move the throttle all the way open and see the secondarys pull open and not hit the lock out lever.
Had a bad distributor in it before and went back to a mallory hyfire box, petronix unit dizzy, and blaster 2 coil I ran in my last maverick setup. Timing is set at 10 btdc initial timing.
Until I get the time to run to the store and actually get the manual choke setup I will try and secure the chock lever so that It cannot move and see what happens with that. Thanks
usually a stiff wire like coat hanger bent through the choke lever and clamped in the choke cable clamp will keep the choke open. do check to make sure the secondary butterflys are opening when you move the throttle lever to fully open. their is a chance the lock out linkage is miss adjusted and is locking it out even with the choke open. Edlebrock adjusts these by bending the rod that goes from the choke plate shaft to the lock out lever.
Bump that fuel pressure up to 6.5 psi. Assuming it is a 1405 600 cfm? The reason I got rid of the edelbrock 1406 (electric choke version of 1405) on my 308 was fuel starvation, even at 6.5 psi. Went to Holley 600 double pump and still lean, then finally nailed it with 750 holley double pump.
