recently the engine (6 cyl) has developed a ticking noise, its not evident when you start the engine or when driving for the first ten minutes, it seems to appear after driving in stop go traffic, i can pull up at a stop light and hear the tick, it will at idle go away on its own or if I rev the engine that will kill the noise too. it does return after 2 or 3 minutes. The engine performance id fine, it does burn oil and every 8 months I usually need to change the points and plugs, its due for that now. Hoping its not something more serious like a rod/bearing etc... I would appreciate any advice from the Maverick community Thanks Jim
it could be and exhaust leak, bad lifter, or a rod knock. you can use a hose against your ear and run the other end around the exhaust manifold and pipes and you will hear an exhaust leak when you close to it. if its a lifter, a lot of times a oil treatment will clean out what ever is gumming up the lifters. a rod knock will require a rebuild. thicker oil may buy you more time.
last oil change was about 4 months back when I had a new torque converter installed, I know I need a new muffler which perhaps could be contributing to the sound? there are MANY miles on the clock, I think it has been round once
Wouldn't hurt to check and make sure the nuts are tight! I've had loose torque converters make many kinds of sounds. Some from a light ticking to "it's going to throw a rod" sound.
