Grommet around wiper shaft -- necessary??

    Do you guys who have painted your Mavs/Comets replace them? Are they necessary? Why is there only one?

    1972 Maverick 2 door.Original V-8 3 spd std shift.Also a 72 one owner Sprint sporting a 351 Windsor
    There is only due to the proximity of the wiper shaft to the cowl hat on the drivers side...Without the grommet capillary action and surface tension could allow water to drop into the car through the hat.
    Is it absolutely neccesary...No.

    I have found one has to remove the wiper assembly out of the hole in order to guarantee no tears.

    So did only A/C cars have them? My Maverick didn't but my Comet does. Comet had A/C...Maverick didn't.

    Did Mustangs have them? Do Pintos? Might have a better chance finding one on a AMC or school bus that will fit close enough for a replacement
