Mikey and I thought the rear lights on the Comet looked too “fussy” and decided to go with the Impala/Caprice mod. There is a great tutorial on this in the tech section, but for a Maverick. When we started cutting we found that the Comet rear panel is not flat and has a raised portion to match the plastic housings. Nothing that a BFH won’t fix. Also, we wanted the lights to sequence like the later Mustangs do. The early Thunderbirds and Cougars that had sequencing lights used a Rube Goldberg mechanical system with relays and motors. They apparently were rather unreliable. We intend to use the original turn signal/brake wires to drive a brain box that will tell the lights when to go on and off. Power will not go through the column; the juice will be fed through a number 10 wire directly from the battery. When all three brake lamps are lit with 2357 bulbs, the current draw is 7 amps per side. Most taillight sequencer aftermarket boxes flash the lights on both sides in an “inner to outer” sequence when the brakes are applied. This is sure to draw unwanted attention from the fuzz. As we all know, driving a 40 years old car is attention getting itself. If one uses the original wires for signaling, a sophisticated brain box is needed. Here is a comparison shot of old and new lights. I did not but the expensive NOS or perfect repro light assemblies but with some cleanup, they will work fine. Says are from 67 Chevy. We also scored some 67 Mustang backup light assemblies to mount under the bumper. John and Mikey
I myself think the comet tail lights are sexy and wouldnt give em up looks like you did a nice job installing those lights though if I didnt know better I wouldve thought that was the way they came from the factory
If I didn't go with the bobcat lights I would have gone with those also. Way better than the stock ones!
is this a Kali. thing... nice mod...:Handshake my...taillight sequencer...is not a "sophisticated brain box"... http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm
I used a sequencer from this place on mine: http://www.webelectricproducts.com/ You can wire it so that the turn signals sequence but the brake lights all come on at once.
