Magnaflows on mine had an UNBEARABLE drone. My bro wore ear plugs on our tirp to Florida.

What muffler will guarantee no drone, but still give a little bit of growl?

I had a little drone (very little) on dualled short glasspacks, so if I go that route, I will need longer ones. Long sidepipe glasspacks had none.

Getting tired of swapping exhausts every few years.

Anyone have any extra mufflers in 2.5" they want to donate, I will pay shipping both ways, until I find what I like. I might go as little as 2.25 if I have to.

 

Do u still have them on the car? Must have been a vry tiring, unpleasant for ur brother. Think he will accompany u agn?

 

Long gone, replaced with Thrush Turbos. Also deleted the X-pipe and added 12" glass packs as resonators on either side of the fuel tank as stated in the earlier post. Sounds great now. Took three tries but finally got a cool exhaust system.

BTW, when I queried the muffler manufacturer, they suggested resonators to cure the drone. It thought they might quiet it too much but It didn't.

 

Jsarnold. I looked back at 3 or 4 of my drone rant threads, and each one has you poppin' your head up talkin' about your glaspak after the muffler as a quieting item.

I don't suppose you could post a picture of the way you have them mounted?

I know how you have them mounted, but I just cannot picture them behind the axle in a fashion where they would fit.

 

Yep, been tellin' ya that each time. Will get a couple of pictures up soon. Maybe you can tell I really like the exhaust system now.

The Mustang fuel tank makes room on the driver's side. Not sure if it would work with the Maverick tank. Obviously there's lots of room on the passenger side since that's where the original muffler was.

As mentioned before, the exhaust pipes are 2.5" and the tail pipes are 2.25" but I expect 2.5" tail pipes would work as well.

 

I might have a set of used thrush turbos in the shop I saved from somebodys hotrod...I wont be back in to work till wednesday and can let you know then if your interested in that style muffler

 

I'd just about bet money the drone is the result of the hangers. Different hangers won't help either. When you run the pipes out the back, hangars from the mufflers to the uni-body are not used. The hangers would be mounted on the tailpipes, so further away from the passenger compartment. Resonance from your mufflers is being transferred directly to the passenger compartment.Eliminate those hangers & run tailpipes, and your drone problem is solved.

Been up for 90 mins, cannot sleep. Did some research on the drone, and found that a good portion of my problem is that I have the mufflers hanging not only from poor hangers, but hanging from the floor of the passenger compartment. All internet sources say to hang from frame only!

So that will be my next step. Better rubber hangers, and hang from the frame.

Currently, since I have no back seat, I just bolted it up into the holes for the seatbelts in the back seat.

 

Is it legal to run that flexible exhaust tubing like you see on big trucks near the catalytic converter? Not the cheap stuff like I used here, but the heavy duty braided stuff?

I think I need to get a little less rigidity in this setup, and I may stab a chunk of that in just after the collector to flex the system up a little, then hang with oem rubber hangers from the frame, maybe in two different locations.

A lot of the write-ups state that as we start to weld up rigid exhaust systems, and get away from the bolted up and slipped-on and hose-clamped oem type setups, we start to pick up more drone.

I have had some amount of drone ever since I put on long tube headers, and am still not completely convinced that they aren't contributing, especially since one is either touching, or very close to touching, the shock tower.

 

You're running converters on it ? Houston musta really gotten strict with smog checks.

Here is what I am talking about, a flex coupler. Just to remove some of the rigidity in my setup at the front half, sorta like we are talking about with better hangers at the rear end.

All trying to minimize the amount of vibration going into the metal of the car.

 

Are u happy with those thrush mufflers? i put some on my car and it doesnt sound like flowmaster to me, being as most people said it would

 

Yes, I will most likely end up with new mufflers, and most likely going over the axle and exiting out the back behind the tires, but first, I want to experiment and see if I can reduce or even remove the drone with my current setup.

My truck has a 50 series flowmaster, and all the rest of the system is oem, and it has a nice sound, and zero drone. If it can be done on the truck, I should be able to quiet it down in the car as well.
