Been a while since I have posted, hello everyone! Back in the saddle and VERY interested in starting this project... slow and steady, it will get done.

    My question...

    I have a 1992 Mercury Cougar LS with a 5.0L 302 EFI (211000km, well maintained).

What, if any, parts, can be transplanted one way or another to a Maverick or Comet? What has to be deleted altogether? What can be retrofitted? What can be made to fit?

    Bottom line, what is salvageable?

    Anyone out there done this?

    Engine?
    Transmission?
    Computer?
    Suspension?
    Brakes, etc?
    Seats?
    Exhaust?
    etc etc etc.

    Thanks for any input!

Mods - if this post is better suited elsewhere please move.

Really depends on how skilled you are at adapting the various components and/or how deep our pockets are. Not sure what the motor in the Cougar has as far as cam and heads, a simple check of the heads will tell you what they are, look at the lower front corner of the passenger side head, next to the valve cover. There you will find a letter cast. "T" will be E7TE heads, "S" will be E6SE heads. I looked it up, it should be an HO motor, or at least it does have the HO's roller cam. It can be carbed easily, just replace the intake with one of these: Edelbrock RPM, Weiand Stealth. Top it with a 600 cfm carb ( Holley's 570 Street Avenger is my favorite here) Take a drill and a good carbide bit and remove the Thermactor bumps from the exhaust port roofs, then add headers. The distributor can be replaced with an 85 Stang Duraspark (the only application that has the steel gear to match the roller cam here was the unit for the manual transmission cars) And of course you will need to swap the oilpan for a front sump, plus replace the timing cover if using a Vbelt setup, you'll alsoi need to plug the dipstick hole in the block and use a timing cover mount dipstick. There are also a few other things that'll need addressing, but that's also based on what you have now as far as a Mav/Comet to work with.

    Thanks baddad!

    Great info...

Can you point out some of the pros and cons on deleting the computer and going carb?

Pro? Simplicity. Con ? The only con is you're in B.C. and carbs do not adapt to alitutude changes.

Don't forget to plug the smog ports in the backs of the heads if you do this. Cheap part or annoying pain later.
