Last week at school we used a oscilloscope on our distributors in class. After analyzing it my teacher said that my distributor was bad he mentioned that the upper bushing was bad or the shaft. He said that I could buy a whole new electric distributor or just buy a stock one and replace the points with my distributor..What is my best option here, I dont mind spending some cash
Was it this loose? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPw9ejfj-EM&feature=youtu.be Buy a Duraspark and quality box...not the cheap $25 box
Im not sure if its that loose he just diagnosed it based on the firing line that showed up on the oscilloscope. But the last time that we took it out he mentioned something about the weights as well cause RPM would take a a while to drop back down after I reved the engine.
So will it be a single vacuum or dual vacuum distributor and If I have a 69 302 block would I ask for a distributor for a 69 or will a distributor from a 73 work as well?
i would definitely change out the distributor. two reasons. its a points distributor and its got allot of miles on it. there are allot of choices to replace it with. the dura spark way is a good way to go, so is the pertronics. both have benefits and disadvantages. the pertronics is the easiest way to go. its very simple to install. a dura spark would require some rewiring.
I already have pertronix or some sort of electronic ignition installed in my distributor thats why my teacher said to buy a stock distributor with points and replace it with pertronix that I have in my distributor now
Would I gain anything by buying an MSD one or any high quality brand or Am I better off with a stock one and what I have now?
you only need enough spark energy to adequately light off the the air fuel mixture in the cylinder. once that is done the rest of the power is just wasted away. the distributor it self does not make spark power. the only advantage to the msd that you could take advantage of is the easy ability to change the advance weights and springs to change the timing curves. it has other features but they really would not benefit your motor. they are more for very high rpm operating motors.
