What is the proper voltage for the maverick ignition circuit.

I am currently getting betweel 6-9v dc from the switched ignition lead.

Me being a dummy had my mallory HEI running off this lead! NO WONDER it stumbled a bit.

NOW I have a full starting relay wired in. But my gauges are currently wired to the ignition circuit and are seeing this low voltage.

Does the maverick have a resistor in the switched ignition circuit? :hmmm:

    Thanks for the help.

Stock I believe is 9V to the coil, the coil wire has a built in resistor. I cant remember but I think you can cut out and solder in a piece a 12ga or 14ga? and it will give you 12v.

The entire wire is resistive on Mavericks.

I am not running any factory wires except I tied into the 12v switched ignition that was on the solenoid....I just went ahead and installed a starting relay...now the car is running A MILLION times better.

With 6v on the distributor and carb choke the damn thing sounded like I put a damn .810 lift cam in it.

And the rpm gauge is responding correctly now..

To rephrase thanks yall for verifying that for me, I installed a starting relay which has solved my problemo :)

On the under hood plug, there are other switched pure 12V connections, but you got it anyways. (y)

You could also put in a 6VDC to 12VDC converter circuit like this one.

    http://powersupplyadapter.blogspot.com/2010/06/6vdc-to-12vdc-converter-circuit.html

And with a 12VDC regulator on the output you would never have to worry about overcharging. I considered it for looking cleaner than a relay but ultimately went with the relay because it was cheaper.

You would also have to beef up the specs on that to get enough amperage. but it COULD be done.

I found a 3 prong plug under the hood that I did not check for voltage...I now have 3 unsightly relays under the hood and a horrible looking wiring harness. BUT this can be redone at any time, right now I am testing/tuning the car and working kinks out.

This was a kink but all good now!

I know what you mean. I've been trying to track down an overcharging issue for months now. I've rewired half of the engine bay. I've been a good boy though and used lots of cable ties, wire loom, and liquid electrical tape. Sad to think when I eventually do the EFI swap I'll be ripping just about ALL of that out...
