water pump choice???

    well i removed the heater system from my car anyway so looks like electric pump is clearly the favorite around here!! now i just need to find a good deal on one!thanks guys

    Give Rich at R&D a call, that's where I bought my new CSR pump, and it was cheaper than Summitt or Jegs and also comes with the timing cover plate and I got a radiator adapter for free....................... Phone is 952-469-3219

    I run a Mezeire on my race only Maverick. The service from Mezeire is great. The only problem I see with the electric water pump is if something happens to you on the road far from home. You usually can't go to the local parts store for a new one. If that's not going to be a problem then I highly reccommend Mezeire. They will stand behind it. :)

    One other thought on Meziere: If you get the one with an idler pulley, the stock belts are routed as they are with a standard pump, which would allow you to put a stock pump back on in a pinch. (beats being stranded) This is also the case with the mod motored stuff using an idler.

    For any of you guys that haven't taken apart an electric water pump lately, all I have to say it that electric motors will run as long as a normal water pump with less maintenance. The only issue that I see is the 4 brushes, and they can be changed out in the time it would take to replace a pump.
    I don't understand why you think they will fail................IMHO

    Can you change brushes easily enough if you break down? Is that the only thing that can go wrong, or can the windings burn up? Wondering if it would be a good idea to carry spare brushes in the car or a spare motor? I haven't looked but are brushes readily available?

    I've never had to rebuild mine. Had it on the car for about 8 years now. Only thing i've needed to do was replace the gaskets when I rebuilt the motor. They sent them right out. BUT, like all things mechanical they do wear out at some point. I haven't had anything wear out at a convenient time. :)

    Personally, I've had more problems with parts store variety mechanical pumps than anything. The biggest issues being bearing failure and seal failure. Those parts are usually of much better quality and under alot less stress in an electric pump vs mech. Any of the bigger name brand electric pumps are at least as good as an OEM mech. JMHO

    Besides, how many guys run electric fuel pumps? Same situation. If it fails, depending on your install, it could be a real pain to fix in the field and a dead one will definitely leave you on the side of the road.

    Here is a picture of the motor that was in the Maverick since the early 90's.....rebuilt once by....now just needs new O rings.
    CSR doesn't use any gaskets, just O rings so at most you could order a set of O rings and brushes. It has 4 brushes around the armature which is not real easy............it takes 4 small paper clips to hold them down while you slide the housing over the armature............but it's doable alongside the road (as long as it's not raining).............carrying a spare motor; well you would just as well carry a complete rebuilt unit.
    How many of you carry spare water pumps??????????????????????????????????

    One more advantage, and I'll shut up. I wired a Mustang and a Lightning to have a manual override under the hood that would run the cooling fan on low speed and water pump between passes in the pits to cool the engine without it having to run. (a battery charger is best to have on hand to do this because of the fan)

    For me, since the Maverick is a drag only car, is that when I get back to the pits the motor is usually around 200............I shut the motor off and just run the electric water pump for maybe 2/3 minutes and it cools it back down to around 170 without the motor running.

    Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
    after all this reading i haven't seen one photo of a electric pump on a maverick. i am a visual guy here. show me some photos!!!! lol!

    so bottom line is no electric pumps come with a bypass provision. am i reading that correctly? hum i don't have heater anymore either. or at least i don't have it hooked up anymore... cores probably gone by now anyhow. lol!
