i had a 302 vibration that was the crank shaft so i said no biggie i had one in my storage...so i put the engine in and it runs fine..but as soon as u press the gas even a little there's a bad vibration...i did notice that there wasnt a weight on the flex plate...so i went on autozone, advance and other websites and the picture they show of flexplates all have weights on it..now i dont know what year this motor is but im kinda thinkin its the wrong flexplate or the weight broke off? what do u all think?????????????????
well i found out it was the crank because it had a bunch of play in it...and on this motor i dont know where year the crank is...how do i know that... the pic that u see is the motor thats in it now..the washer where u put the fulid for your windshield wont even fit..been so long i dont remember what it came out of...
i dont understand what you are saying. first off how do you determine that the crank has lots of play in it? you should have checked the bearing clearances when you were installing it what does the windshield washer have to do with your crank and what washer wont fit? and as frank asked how did you come up with the crank causing the vibration? usually cranks wont go bad and start vibrating unless its cracked or has thrown a balancing weight. i would have to guess that you are in over your head at this point.
No the.engine I took out had a bad crankshaft...this on that I have in it now runs fine just vibrates when u speed or or.press the gas when its in park.....before I put the engine in that I have now I put a seal in the transmission, while doing that I notice no weights on the flexplate..back to what I asked thefirst time how do I know the year of the.crank...
The best thing you can do at this point is pull that motor send it to a qualified machinist and have him/her tell you what is really going on....i too feel you are in over your head at this point.....anyways that is my advice good luck no matter the course you take.....
take a 35-40 year old engine to a machinist for maybe a flex plate??? no. i will just have to ask around maybe somebody can give me some info... one older guy that worked at ford told me it was the wrong flex plate and that mine need weights on it..i might just run with that..my other 2 comet have weights on the flex plates so who knows
If your flexplate is missing a counterweight, then you need to replace it with one that's got the counterweight. Look at the casting numbers on the block above the starter. If the first character is a C or D, then you need a 28 oz/in flexplate. If the first character is an E or F then it most likely needs a 50 oz/in flexplate. I say "most likely" because the early 80's 302's used a 28 oz/in flexplate (1980 and 1981) These blocks had an E0AE casting number. There's no need to pull the engine to figure this out.
here is the issue some motors that have been torn apart have mismatched flywheels/and or balancers.....it could have been balanced before and will need rebalanced to a new flywheel/flexplate and balancer..... It could have also been neutral balanced at some point.....in that case you would have a balancer and flywheel with no weight and the crank would be the part that was balanced..... the only way to know for sure is to remove the crank and spin it on a balancer.....yeah you can try a flywheel and see what happens.....but to be honest your posting skills have me and most people confused.....you are not very coherent in your posts....YOu also talk about play????if you have lotsa endplay that will cause a vibration also.......I have seen cracked timing gears cause vibrations....Cracked flexplates.....torque converter going bad/out of balance.....and on and on.....you just seem like you want a magic answer.....so I gave you the one that will find your problem for sure.....take it part have all parts inspected(by a competent professional) make sure they match and then have them balanced......
The chances that his crank has been rebalanced to neutral is slim and none. And you do NOT have to remove it and spin it to find out which it is. To do so or tell someone that they must is ludicrous. The casting numbers will tell you which it is. But all this is a moot point as if he follows my instructions, he's got a 90% chance his first pick will be the right one.
