ive got some cowl rust i need to address as well as restore my hvac case..so it came out today. it was nowhere near as hard as i had imagined.. but im used to working on newer crap that is just pure evil like dodge stratus ecore.... any who i got a few questions.. im going to be running a late model compressor and i know a few guys here are too, so what have yall done as far as condenser and drier? anyone have a good pic of the drain tube? mine was broken off and someone had shoved a funnel in the tunnel instead...
I am running a late mod compressor, Xflow condenser and drier. I got an entire setup frm Classic Auto Air. I also had an issue w/ my spout being broken. The folks at Classic were gud folks to work with. This is what I did to repair the broken spout. Copper sleeve, glassed in. Working gud so far. Drier is mounted on the back of the core support nx to the radiator. Have more pic if necessary.
Sure is easy compared to our new crap aint it? I love it when guys complain about tough jobs on these cars. LOL.
I would at least recommend getting the condensor rebuilt. Definitly get the dryer rebuilt. You can even buy "newer" versions of those two items, as Everett (Mojo)did.
Contact Classic Auto Air. I assume you are going R-134a. Let them know that and I am sure they can fix you up.
got a couple pics...looks like i have the cube ecore. which is full of dirt. as you can see my case is cracked so im either going to glass this one or see if this piece on my donor is better . in the last pic what is this switch? and can i get this piece of foam new in the 4th pic?
Mine, like Mojo's, also has an Underhood Kit with Sanden compressor from Classic Auto Air but with some different parts. They got a reproduced serial condenser that bolted right in like the original. They rebuilt my drier (about $90 plus shipping both ways) but since then I found that Rock Auto sells replacement driers ($45 plus shipping). I had to open the system to change engines so needed a new drier. Got two and the mounting bracket is a little different than the original. Haven't tried to mount it yet so can't say how it will work out. Installed a new expansion valve, but its for R12 like the original. Doesn't seem to be a problem. They refurbished and tested my evaporator. I'm very pleased with the system except for one issue with the switch on the evaporator that prevents icing. It opens too soon so on really hot days its not blowing real cold while the compressor is off. Been advised, on here, that the switch is adjustable but don't think I can do it with the HVAC box in place and I'm not about to pull it out again. Its too bad they didn't mount that switch so it could be adjusted with the system assembled and running.
I don't think a repop for the foam is available "at least to my knowledge". I soaked mine real gud in silicone spray and put it back. Ur's looks to be in worst shape than mine. I can't tell frm the pix if ur evap is the same as mine, pix a little fuzzy. Anyway, I wud have the ecore pressure tested at the very least. I had mine ck out at a rad shop and tested ok. It had rust on the steel mounting surfaces; I cleaned them up real gud and painted them w/ some aluminized fence paint. It's probably best to do like "JSArnold" suggest; have it refurbed. While ur at it - I wud replace the heater core. Im sure the crack in the wall can be repaired. I wud use some moisture resistant glue "Gorilla Glue" or something like it and then glass over it. I used some copper/brass strip and tubing silver soldered to repair the broken spout. I painted all the metal in the box w/ alum paint. I got a foam kit for a Stang to replace a lot of the padding in the box. Can't recall which kit, but if necessary can look it up. U may have to make/fab some foam to seal the firewall opening if ur not able to reuse the orig. JSArnold might want to chime in here, I believe he used something other than the orig. Pix 1.) Box B4 anything done to it "2.& 3.) Parts all painted and ready for reassembly as u can see the copper tubes paint along w/ the steel mounting surfaces.
thats gravy money dave!! even better is a recirc door, they break all the time. warranty used to pay very well but someone taught chysler how we do them so fast so time dropped by 3 HOURS!!! but i can still do it in under half of what warranty pays.. they say pull the dash.. i say pull the blower motor and glove box
Mustangs Unlimited has a foam kit for a 71-73 with ac that looks very similar to ours. I was able to reuse mine, but if I could have waited, I would take another look at it. It was only around $17.
