on summit I've seen intermediate pipes for early mustangs that are 2.5" I wonder if they would work...

After much experimenting with my exhaust setup, this is where I am going. Not sure if it will be a flowmaster or just a glasspack, but definitely a "siamese" setup.

If I were to change it, I would also consider this again. Mine did drone like hell tho but it sounded positively wicked at 5500RPM.:mischeif:

Oh, yes, mine DOES sound wicked. Especially with both mufflers open and connected. Especially from 5000 on up to 7000 rpms!

Actually, it sounds so good, I might just learn to live with the drone.

Kinda going back and forth on this one. That is why I am still experimenting and not doing anything permanent yet...

Can you not have bottom end torque loss, with the exhaust having low back pressure, due to being oversized?

    yes

properly sized piping enhances scavenging, increasing torque

Yes, that is why mine feels more "torquey" with one half of the dual exhaust capped off.

I am sure a siamese setup will give me the best of both worlds, once I get the post-Y opened up a bit.

The Flowmaster Y-pipe is also designed specifically to scavenge one bank to the other as well similar to a collector on a header.(y)
