What are you guys setting the timing at on your 5.0 motors? Here is a list of the motor stuff. b303 cam e7 heads mild port and polish ( stock valves ) springs to match cam. 600 holley duraspark box 85 gt dizzy Running a t5 trans also Thanks for the input :Handshake
mine has a b303 in it, its been a while since i set the timing its either 14* or 15* initial and 34* total I could probably go a little more but I'm running mid grade
You can find what initial timing your engine likes by starting around 12* initial, warming it up, shut down and heat soak for a minute then try and restart it. If it starts easily advance the timing another 2*, shut down and heat soak for a minute then try to restart again. keep doing this. Eventually you'll get to a point where the starter will drag or or the engine may even spit back when you try to restart it. Back off the timing 2* from there. The only time that hasn't worked for me is when I ran a big honking roller cam with over 300* advertised duration. That thing was advanced up to 30* initial with no end in sight. Most small block Fords make best power right around 35* total timing. Time slips, G-Tech or dyno can help you nail it.
Anywhere from 12-18* initial is where you'll find a sweet spot. You may need to add more octane though to find it. Bump it up, run it and listen for the pinging, then add more octane to the fuel to control the ping.
Both good points, I find it's all about what the motor will take, just have to fine tune everyone, a little different.
My setup is close to yours. So far early in the tuning it seems to like 14. I'm sure I am going to get a couple more out of it with some more tuning. Thats on 87 as well. But as far as what your motor takes like stated above every one is a little different. And I think every harmonic balancer is a little different as well as sad as that is to say
I run an Lunati cam Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 284/292 Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 218/226 Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .500/.510 LSA/ICL: 112/108 I can run 12 degrees base and about 32 degrees total on 87 octane. I did this with my steel heads and my Trick flow heads. I can bump it up to 16 or so initial when I have some good gas but usually on do this at the track. But every engine is different based on the whole setup. But the common rule for the Mustang guys is the first thing you do when buying a stock 5.0 is take it home and set timing at 12 degrees. If you are runnign anything less than 12 you can bump it up. anything more than 12 is trial and error.
