does it die if you let off? and you're sure the timing is correct? no vacuum leaks?

    Choke maybe

If it's got an electric choke check the power lead for 12 volts. My car did the same thing when I first got it, and that was my problem. You could also have a vacuum leak, maybe a bad carb gasket. or it could be a couple dozen other things. Good luck.

hmmm... alright. we'll check the choke out tomorrow... Maybe it'll do it. If not we'll check for vacuum leaks.

We looked for vacuum leaks all over, but didn't find any at all... so we're pretty sure it's not that... And it seems to be something to do with the carburetor...

is the idle mixture screw screwed too far in?
is the idle speed screw set too low?
has the carb been rebuilt of sitting for a long time.

Ok so here's what we got... It'll start and run fine when we spray starting fluid in the carburetor, but wen we let off the gas, it'll die, wont idle. It seems like it's not getting fuel to the carb? :hmmm:

With the engine off, open the choke butterfly & have a friend shine a light down the carb barrell. Take a look down though the carb so you can see the bottom buttterfly. Then once you can see properly, pull the throttle lever, you should see gas spraying into the carburator, if not, then the float bowl isnt filling with gas, or you may have a clogged primer curcuit. During the rebuild, you would have had to reset the float bowl level, (the rebuild kit should have provided a ruler with it to do this). If the float's are not set to the right position then you will either get too much fuel,(leaking into the engine past the throttle valve and into the crank case, thinning the oil and causing alot of other problems), or little to no fuel at all to supply the engine. If you are getting fuel, then there mite be a problem with the idel curcuit, this could be a clogg or a bad idle/mixture screw. Sometimes a idle/mixture screw can get damaged from over tighting them. If your sure the carb is up to snuff, I'd look at the fuel filter and the pump. Good luck man.

have your fuel lines been sitting awhile? (possibly clogged), or old/dirty fuel filter?

pull fuel line off the carb. turn engine over to see if your fuel pump is sending a good amount of fuel to the carb, that should rule out clogged fuel lines/tank, and the pump itself.

during rebuild did you let the carb soak overnight in parts cleaner ands replace all the jets/clean ports good?

be sure the carb mount on the head is flat, they are aluminum and could be warped or damaged allowing too much air in.

rebuild kit should have came with proper adjustments for the choke/idle screw.
