im looking for the cheapest way to find a setup (valves, valve springs, retainers, cyl head) for my 250.Im having a problem pricing it all.by the time i put the whole thing together buy all the parts individually with a used head that i would have had worked and cleaned........comes down to about 400$ way to much..right?..... i could buy a whole used motor?new heads or refurbished ones at CSK auto are about 350$ should i do that or are they worthless? im running in circles as to what my solution is.

I would look for a used complete motor. They are cheap and can be found. I have (3) 6 cyl motors I want to sell, but only one of them is a 250 and it has a cracked head (still runs good).

When you buy a cam get the kit with lifters and springs - that way you get what works and at a lower price than separate prices. Stock rockers will work fine because you don't get to rec them too high (long crank causes harmonics). Clean the bowls and mill the intake log for a 2x2 carb adapter to mount (complete with the elongated hole) and mount a Ford 2100 2bbl on it.
Use your stock keepers, retainers and pushrods and have the head milled to increase compression. Get a decent header and extend the collector to around half the length ofthe primary tubes. Use 2.5 to 3" tube and muffler for a free-flowing exhaust that will add to the low end helping the average power over the entire rpm range of your engine.

good luck with build. $400 sounds about right though on a rebuilt head. i spent right above $300 for my parts and that was keeping the non adjustable rockers
