There is quite a bit of slop in the connection of the control valve and my pitman arm. The ball stud is moving, big time, in the valve when I move the steering wheel back and forth...I believe this is the cause of the sloppiness in the steering while driving. Is there a cure for this slop? Can this be tightened up? Well I just read this post.....http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=60438&highlight=p/s+control+valve+ball+stud and that may well fix my problem, will try it tommorow and see.
Nope, that didnt fix it. I could get the nut to do one turn, but not more that that, so hopefully there is a cure other than the nut.
THERE IS DONT WORRY. my 74 i put new everything in it and replaced the shocks. it is driving better than a new car but still power steering leaks. i replaced pitman arm. control valve, basically the whole steering box.
Is this when the car is not running? If so that is perfectly normal! If the adjustment described in before posts doesn't help, you may have an alignment disorder. Have your car checked by someone familiar with older Ford front ends. Not to diss anyone but I mean other than Walmart or Tire Kingdom franchises!
When I rebuilt mine, it was pretty sloppy, the internal copper sleeve was pretty worn, and around the socket hole, it was mushroomed out.
Havent had anyone here to help, so I have not checked with the engine running, will try tomorrow. I just had the car aligned on friday at my ford garage where I work, and I fully trust the mechanics there, before he even saw the car he was describing the procedure to me for aligning these front ends. 1974fordmaverik...where did you get your control valve? And how much was it? Dave Boyer.....what did you do?
not sure if this is on the same subject but when i was 19,with my 1st mav we were coming home from a RUSH concert in chicago and my rag joint took a **** on me.anyone who has had that happen to them i need not explain.it was cold and icy and we were a BIT BUZZED.you have a half turn of free play of the steering wheel before it catches and you are able to steer in the direction you want to go.we were 15 miles away from home and dammit i made it!someone else embellish what happens when the ragjoint goes out
sorry it took so long but i rebuilt it. only NAPA auto parts carry them. it works awesome and i drive it everyday for around 15 bucks. autozone carries one for about 250 bucks. i choose the cheap way
