Found a 289 for a great price out of a 66 mustang (it is, i checked) Was wondering if it would be worth the 200 bucks, take the internals out and put it in the 302 roller motor with the 289 heads and intake:16suspect kind of like a mini stroker from what i here. If i do this then the 289 block isn't worth nearly anything, is it?:16suspect Ill do some research but give me your opinion
it would be a huge waste of time and money. You would be getting less cubic inches and much older parts. 289 heads are nothing special to brag about. A stock set of e7 heads will flow more than 289 heads will. The only thing the 289 heads have is a small combustion chamber that will get your compression up. A nicely built roller cammed 302 with gt40 or ported e7 heads will easily destroy an old 289.
where can sbf head specs be found? I've heard similar info on 289 heads on old 302's. Are they hp heads?
As mentioned, why would you want less cubes? The 289 block is stronger than a roller 5.0 block. Old parts may sound like a good deal up front but may need the crank turned, new pistons, rods resized...
its going backwards. theres no replacement for displacement. i rember a guy at the street races that had a "built 289" in his 70 mustang. he wanted to race me in my built 351 69 mustang. i asked why he had a 289, and he said because it was fast. i beat him really bad. also i dont think the two pice rear main seal crank will work in a one pice rear main seal block. i may be wrong on that but i seem to have a memory of that .
huh you have a point Bryant but the 1 piece just slips on, this may be getting interesting. Whats all this mumbo jumbo of hotrodding a 302 with 289 internals then? i thought it was a quicker stroke?
289 crank/rods in a 302 block make a 289...Bore is the same between the two. The stroke is the differentiatoin between a 289 and a 302. You will be gaining nothing by doing this kind of build.
The 289 spinning up quicker is just another old myth. A guy I know put together a 72 grabber with a 289 4sp and 4.11 gears. The 289 had flattops, .480 lift cam not sure on heads, performer 289 intake, 650 holley dp, hei distributor. He claimed it ran 8.00 at 98 in the 1/8. He got it to the track and ran a best of 9.90 at 71mph. He blaimed it on the shifter and they worked on it for about an hour. It then ran a 10.20 at 67mph I believe. That was one of the funniest things I had seen in a while
I think hes thinking of the longer 289 rod that people used to use in 302s back in the day. Before there was a plethora of aftermarket parts.
The stroke difference is .13" I think its a 2.87" stroke vs 302 3" stroke. Very little difference in stroke and cubic inches. But why would you want to go smaller?? 289 runs a bit less torque and my experience in the past I would rather have a 302. Hell if anything happens to my motor its a stroker for sure.
Thanks guys, guess ill pass on the 289. I know i drive you guys crazy but i could have just waisted 200 bucks.
It's all in how you build it..... and 3 or 4 cubic inches isn't going to be more than 1hp difference all things being equal. 289s do rev higher and easier from my xp.....and a high winding 289 sounds way better than a high winding 302......it just does IMHO!!!! I will put my lil 281 cubic inches against 347s and 351s when it is done A similar build except I will have more compression and custom cams e85 and ram air!!!! http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/..._2_valve_46_l_ford_modular_engines/index.html Think about it 460 hp from a 281 ci(Teksid aluminum block, Aluminum heads Alum water pump etc.... SHould weigh 400 pounds fully dressed and filled with fluids) that weighs less than any 302 or a 351w..... I feel after much study and talking to some very big time racers and builders about my engine it could put out 475 to 525 FWHP and be very street able!!!! N/A to boot Those old 289s could be made to run too.....Pinky knows about one.....I got vid of one that has a jericho 4 speed 289 car that wheelies every gear(most of the time) change!!!! Sweet runs very very fast!!! His name was doc....that car was wicked!!!!
What do you want out of your car? What are your overall goals from your car your building? Answer them questions and then get a rough estimate of the motor you need, then get a game plan and parts needed list written down. Then STICK with the plan, otherwise you will end up with car on jackstands for far to long. I'm sure most on here will agree and MOST of us have changed combos way to many times, and always say I should have done this the first time. For most it becomes a money issue, that turns into a time issue. And when your switching motor combination every month, then it really takes alot of time and in long run alot of money.
This roller motor isnt going in for a while. Its going to be built with big valve heads, something like the torker intake or a step above the performer rpm, 650 carb, at least 540 lift and eather stock crank/rods/pistons or 289 bottom end. So far it seems like the 289 deal has mixed fealings. Im not starting over with this block, its a low miles motor that just needs a quick honing.
