I just found out that my steering gearbox is bad (leaking fluid all over my driveway). I thought it was a hose, but no such luck.

    My main questions are:

1 - How hard is it to find this part, and how difficult is it to install?
2 - If it IS hard to find or install, can I just drive it with manual steering?
(I know it's hard to steer, as I've driven it around a few times) I just want to know if I'd do any damage to it?

Please let me know your thoughts!!

Not too hard to find...if ya know where to look..as for driving it like that I don't think it's a good idea it is supposed to have gear oil in it to lubricate the gears inside and without lubrication they wont last long.....if you are sure it is the steering box leaking I do have one for power steering in a 71 four door i am not gonna use.

If its the power steering cylinder (slave cylinder) you can find those in several places. I googled it and came up with several places.

    Hi Moneymaker,
Would that part from your 71 fit on my 76 4-door?
If so, what might you be looking to get for it?

I just bought my car, and would like to fix it up a bit
and keep it...if it makes sense to do so...

    Please let me know!

Its not the gearbox. There is no oil in the gearbox its lubricated with grease. It could be the cylinder that's leaking.

National Parts Depot, in Canton should pretty much have most of the parts you'd need. They sell Mustang stuff, but most of it'll work on Mavericks.

I got all my parts from napa and autozone. You pay more, but I had the parts the next day. They carry the hoses, ram, and pump.

i agree. if its power stearing fluid leaking then its the power stearing ram or controle valve. the stearing box uses grease and should not leak.

Make sure the leak isn't from a transmission cooler line... no need to replace a transmission for over-looking a possible source of leakage.

Yes please find out exactly what is leaking before throwing money at it....like has been stated check for other sources of the leak, if it is power stering fluid look at hose connections on the PS control valve or the valve itself, I just replaced my PS control valve in my car and it was not cheap, Place a piece of cardboard under the car and when it leaks onto it don't move it until you get to look under there and get an idea of where it is leaking from, and also look at what leaked onto the cardboard and see what fluid it is...on that side of the engine it could be anything from brake fluid or any number of other fluids.
