My car has the original 200 i6 and I want to know if there are any mild upgrades I can do that won't be a waste of money 3 or 4 years down the road when or if I do a v-8 swap. Thanks
#1 Performance Ignition Box and Coil. #2 Swap to a locker type differential, with lower gears. #3 you can also add a Y pipe and run duals, then when you swap out to a V8 you can just get rid of the P pipe and have true duals.
Swap to a ‘71 (pre-emission) timing chain/gear. Your valve timing was retarded about 6 or 7 degrees from the factory to get better emission numbers. This causes less power because the intake valves are opening up later and drawing less mixture. With your old stretched timing chain the cam is retarded even more. Swap to a Dura Spark ignition if you haven't already.
He might already electronic ignition from the factory. I'd swap to a Duraspark II system instead of the I.
If you rebuild the c4 transmission, have it built for v8 specs. Put a limited slip in the rear end not a locker.
Suspension upgrades, disc brake swap, swaybar, gears... Can't think of much that hasn't been covered. Anything safety related is money well spent though. Good tires, seat belts, brighter headlights... Not exactly performance upgrades but the faster you go the more important they become.
thanks for the ideas I have some questions though how do I know what transmission I have and when I upgrade my ignition what should I look for do I just look up duraspark II ignition or do I need something more specific? thanks
I got my solid state ignition from a 74 maverick (i think only the CA/AZ cars had it.) not as good as duraspark I/II but it gets the job done plus is costed me $10. and my favprite thing is that it uses a small cap, so it looks totally stock! its on the falcon 2 years no problem
the 250 only came with a C4, although someone might have swapped something else in there. Take some pics! Duraspark II Conversion viewtopic.php?t=21002 viewtopic.php?t=53797
250 and 302 used the same C4...the torque converter was different (tighter) in the six. Find a '78 or later Dura-Spark II...they had centrifugal and vacuum advance. Set total advance to 30-34 degrees. Use 8mm Spiro-Core type plug wires. Gap plugs to .50". Use one step colder spark plug.
