I managed to patch it up enough to drive. Got a big ol' shopping list now though. Oh well, I was getting tired of those yellow plug wires anyway...

Damn dude. Glad you had an extinguisher handy and were able to get it put out. Any paint damage to the hood?

Good, or that would be a major bummer.

Glad ya got to it quick enough...I learned along time ago carry a fire extinguisher in the Maverick, my carb was a huge Motorcraft and every time I punched the throttle it overflowed out the top of the carb and killed the engine resulting in a fire....3 times!
First time all I had was dirt and water, big mess.

    Drew,

Looks like you were right on it getting it put out. I was expecting a lot worse before I saw the pictures. Good job!!!

Do you keep the extinguisher in the interior with you? I keep mine in my trunk. Wondering about the few extra seconds it would take to pop the trunk open, etc....

Mine was in the trunk, and I am certain I would have got the fire out sooner if it wasn't. Not only did I have to pop the trunk, but I had to dig through it for what was probably less than a minute but felt like an eternity before I uncovered it.

I will be mounting an extinguisher somewhere after I get this back to normal. Maybe in the interior, maybe the engine bay, maybe both.

Sorry abt the mishap. It's lucky u had ext. in the car. I have one in the trunk also but it's not mounted. After seeing this Im going to mount it on the 1/2" MDF that's on my seatback which was orginally put there to mount a 10" sub. The sub is no longer there. Any idea what started the fire? Looks like the plug wires awfully close to the Holly. Anyway, glad u were ablt to Dodge the Big Bullet.

The screw on the float adjustment apparently vibrated itself loose and sprayed fuel on the distributor. I think I'll be running my wires differently this time, perhaps go to a remote coil setup.

There is still sparkage there. I like the origional small caps myself. Seems more space between the two. Anything can happen tho. Ignition wires touching the carb is definetly a no no. Looks to me like THAT was the problem.
