i have a cam that was run in a race car for two weeks. its a very big solid lift cam. too big for the car. its been sitting in my closet for a couple years. how can i identify this cam to sell it. it has a number stamped into one end 990255. also has 1206 cast in between two lobes
because its cheaper than a new one and has maybe two hours run time. i know more people with used cams than new. my cam is used
Try logging onto the various cam companies websites and look up those numbers. Sounds like maybe a Crane number
Where does it say anything about "roller"? Never mind - I wouldn't buy a used roller cam either. when I buy a cam I usually buy the kit - cam, lifters, springs and retainer. That way I know it all matches and it will wear in as it should. Mixing old and new parts with springs that may or may not match is just asking for more trouble than I want to deal with. The cam in my car is used too, but it was new with new lifters when it was installed. I guess it is just a matter of how lucky you feel.
Cant remember but i think crane cams have a C on the very front Edit: never mind, thats comp cam.... i think....
Mine is Rick Book's old used roller cam. It had many surprises. First was reduced base circle on exhaust lobes, making it a beyotch to install and figure out. Second was the POWER this sucker gave to my engine and the FUN it is to drive now!!! I had no idea what I was getting into, but GLAD I did! I am getting no hits on the internet with those numbers...
since it was a racing cam the numbers are probably not "off the shelf" numbers. without knowing who the grinder is you may not be able to trace it. If you have a dial indicator and a set of "V" blocks you can get the duration and lift figures for it - with a degree wheel and some graph paper. Been there done that.
You could bring it to a machine shop and have them tell you, they do all kinds of fancy measurements or so what im told.
Mostly close facts,,, well if I remember right! Oh, Golly! Only a couple companies make the cam core, cam grinders buy the core and grind what they want, so the # you have is probably the CORE #. The # between the lobes could be who the or what the ground cam is. Sorta hard sometimes to find who that is! I had a cam that came outta my first 408w with no other info other than,,, maybe a Doug Herbert, I called them and they said if I sent it in they would inspect it and give me as much info as they could. It turned out to be Herbert's cam! If not mistaken,,, 50/50 here,,, they said they would do this even if not their cam for free,,, again not sure on this or if not their cam may be a charge. If you put them #s on drag race review, you may get a answer. Also,, double check real hard for any other numbers or markings. Some are very hard to see! Good Luck!
