Hey guys. A couple of my buddies have some spare parts and are willing to give me some for almost nothing. This will just be an engine to get me by until I can afford a performance 302 or 347, but I still want to know if anyone has had experience with a build similar or if they know it's a bad combo right off the bat. The shortblock is in pretty good shape, but the only bad part is that it's bored .60 over, So I'm worried about the walls fracturing and overheating issues. The heads are ported E7s. I haven't heard too great things from E7s but my friend said they flowed just as good if not better than stock gt40s with the port. Don't hold me to that though. I forget the intake manifold, but the carb is a universal double pump holley 650. The rest I have to buy on my own. But Woody has a budget 302 breakdown of parts, so I'll probably stick mostly to those. I'm basically wondering how the parts will react to a .60 bore. What problems I should look for. Better combination parts. What you think think the compression would be like or should be. etc... I'm getting all the parts for about 3-400 dollars. So this is really a frankenstein thrown together 302 part list. Thanks for all your help in advance.
I would start with a cheep 302 to get me by, put it would be a running engine.(which is like half your budget if you get one from the pick and pull.) I'm going to save my money to buy the right parts that I want to make a better engine, and maybe by starting with a 351. I would say that what you have planned would be a good learning experience, you'll spend lots of money and not have what you really want. I am not a mechanic but i've heard you don't want to go past .30 over. getting a little thin .
with that being said.....i think it will do fine...you just need to drive it like it's 60 over... is there an engine in the car now? ......
I have a straight six in the car. But it just took a dump, and instead of spending at least 100-150 to fix it, I'd rather start setting her up for a 302. Yeah. the .60 bore kind of had me worried because I heard .40 is about all you want to go.
I wouldn't put too much money in a block that is .060 over. No matter what, you can never rebuild it again if it needs another bore. You won't know wether it will overheat until you get it finished. Good thing if it is all there, is that any other parts you add can be moved to another block later on.
If its a pre 78 block and you have an excellent cooling system...it will hold together if you dong bang on it. If its a post 78 block, its iffy. Has this engine been run in a car for any period of time??? If so find out how it behaved.
