I bought a rearend out of a 76 Maverick from a junkyard. There are not any tags on it. I researched this forum and found that it is either 3/1 or 297/1 ratio. I do not have the vin but I have the cab card which for some reason has no vin on it. It does say the engine type is v8 I am trying to get back out there to find the vin but have not had any time. I was wondering if v8's came with one ratio or the other. Thanks for your help the rearend is for my 40chevy ratrod. I am a Ford guy, Im on FTE, but I got this car for free 15 years ago and now im getting started on it.
Yes, it is most likely to be a 2.79 ratio but quite a few did come with the 3.00. On rare occasion you might even find a 3.25 but I would bet yours is the 2.79.
I have never seen a Maverick with a 3.25 rear axle in an 8" rear axle. It is either a 3.00:1 or a 2.79:1. If you can go back to the car, look at the data sticker on the car. Worse case, you can count the revolutions of the axle compared to the yoke and determine the ratio.
You are going to want to reseal and check the axle bearing at the very least . With the center section out count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinon due nthe math you will have your ratio.
Maybe it was a 6 cyl car I was thinking of that came with the 3.25. Yeah, I know, it would not have been an 8 in either. Oh well, wouldn't be the 1st time I been wrong. This would be #2!!! I'm falling apart!!!
Actually I went through it already, all new seals, axle bearings, and brakes. I didn't even think about the ratio until I got a free tranny that was missing the speedo gears. Figured I should figure out the ratio before I got the tranny rebuilt. I was so happy when I opened the rearend up and the oil was clean I moved on to the next project in my head.
