I've been through a lot with this alternator bracket stuff. First used the stock V8 stuff and no matter what the tension always wore off after while . . . belt whistled. Then I got the shiny 2 piece metal one from summit, well the long bracket that allows the alternator to adjust wouldn't fit so back to the same problem. Ordered a march kit for $100 and apparently it's the wrong one because my water pump has the hoses going up versus down. So back to square one. At this point I don't care about the price just needs something that will work. I have the 130amp alternator which is probably why the first chrome bracket didn't work.
Had the same problem with an old Chevy truck. It had A/C originally so the alternator had a double groove pulley. Running a single belt (bad compressor) it screemed like a school girl. I was able to run two alternator belts to make it stop. If you haven't already you may look at the pulleys for wear.
im not sure why the march one doesnt work. im thinking that you could use the chorme bracket on the top and use the march adjuster on the bottom of the 3g alt.
"Screamed like a school girl"? I think I need to look that reference up... My problem is a slight wobble in the water pump pulley that forces the belt to walk off at around 6500 rpms. should be easy to fix, but haven't been able to fix it yet.
I use the Moroso one like Jeff posted. No problems with it. I posted the part #, when I got mine, on ebay and one came up new about $30 cheaper than Summit.
sounds like tension issus.. right to clarify this post... if you can get 2 belts going around the pulley. i have a 66 impala and i had the same problem due to how fast the engine reved and i couldn't get enough force on the belt. so it squealed until i ran two belts. an idler would also help if you can get one in line, that way your making more contact area around the alt pulley. some day i am going to dump the v belt for serpentine. much better anyhow.
i bought the chrome one you show when i removed power steering and needed to re locate the water pump to run off of the alt belt. I also had to replace the pulley with one that lined up closer to the alt. the bottom bracket is now aligned to the back of the alt instead of the front which is a pain to tighten. I also had to grind that bottom pieces groove a bit because the angle changes too quickly. I havent had belt squeal issues with the grabber yet (my truck is a whole other story with a whole different setup ) http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/showimage.php?i=9607 now im possibly planning to complicate it more by placing an after market alt i have there but thats another story....
