I bought a nice gas cap for my 76 comet and it does not seam to want to work,it was cold and snowing and I grabbed it when I put gas in the car yesterday (2.39 gallon) seams the bolt heads are in the way.I did not damage the tank either:hmmm: p1015933.jpg p1015931_original.jpg p1015932_original.jpg

More than likely for a different year.

you could get a different filler tube,or you could always take out the filler tube, and get creative with a pr. of vise grips and a dremel.been there done that.:)

This looks like an unleaded filler neck that has been punched out so a regular nozzle could be used. Used to be done so they could run regular in an originally unleaded car.

Try changing the bolts or grinding off some of the heads.

It's tho wrong year. I've ordered 3 gas caps off eBay, and all of them were wrong except for the one with a logo that was in terrible condition.
