so after an hour or two of driving around in the middle of nowhere the wheels I went to go buy wouldn't fit cuz the backspace was too large (I measured it at 5") :(
I really wanted them too.... I stood there for 10 minutes staring at them not working lol

trying to go test two other sets of rims tonight (I'm determined!) but don't wanna have the same situtational disappointment if I can avoid it.
    I drive a 71 stock maverick.

    First set on my list:
4 Radial Trac Plus High Performance M+S tires size P195/60R15 H78 mounted on
    4Crager 5 Star Rims Universal 4 lug
Between 7 and 8 inches wide.
The guy is unsure of how to measure the backspace (I tried to explain how over the phone) Is there a backspace that would be too small or too large for these rims? maybe he'll call back with a happy medium (I hope)

    Second set on the list:
Four 17'' Black and Chrome Scorpion Rims
4 lug (explained how to measure the pattern - we'll see what he comes back with)
Will my backspace requirements be same for these even tho they are 17" and not 15"?
He doesn't know how wide they are but is going to measure and get back to me. I know I will need a lower profile tire, does anyone know my max tire size on a 17" rim?

My understanding is that a 15x8 rim will need at least a 4" backspace, didn't think of too large of a backspace being a problem. Can anyone give me a range for backspacing that would work? (I understand it depends on the offset and width of the wheel and tire size and all that).
Any help or extra input would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse. Thanks again!

honda wheels were what I tried to get tonight that didn't fit :(
I just need something to get me through without robbing the bank til I find the perfects. Here's a diagram to refer to. - might make it easier for me to understand.

    This may help:
    http://www.maverickman.com/TireandWheelSizes.html

Considering, not many cars have had that same 4 bolt pattern since the early 80's, wheels are not easy to find. Anything newer won't fit, the spacing will usually be metric.

Why not just go to Wal Mart, and buy some cheap tires for your rims?

Heck. I don't even know what back spacing is. I assume it's the measurement from the face of the drum to the edge of the leaf springs.

So I read the info and if i'm not mistaken, the last part shows how to measure the wheel back space. Seems like you could lay the wheel on it's inside down and measure in the enter hole backside to get the same result without using a strait edge. ?

been referring to that site. and the tire size calculator. thanks tho. The bolt pattern was right... the backspacing/offset was wrong 4x114.3mm lug pattern should work the same as 4x4.5" correct?
My rims are rusty and tires already slowly losing air after taking them to a tire/rim place to have them worked on.

I've learned ALOT about rims over the last month... Tires not so much. the bead is the tire's edge? (not even really sure how a tire holds air... which is why I took it to a shop when losing air)
