Can anyone recommend a good car lift? I'm partial to something like this, but also like my money too.
Way back in the day when I was still a kid I started working for my Father's lift service, My Father worked on and installed lifts for about 30 years, I worked with him for about 5 years. I have worked on a lot of lifts and installed a lot of lifts. Not claiming to be an expert or anything just some input from a guy that has worked with lifts Just like with most things you get what you pay for, if it's cheap most likely you will be upset about it later, if it's to expensive it is probably better but overkill for what it's intended for, IMO if I were going to buy one and this is just me I would buy a Forward two post 10k capacity with the overhead cross bar. I'm not sure how much they cost now. I found this link to a place that sells them, Ill go look for a place that sells Forward Lifts. http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Vehicle_2_Post_Lifts_s/37.htm Forward lift http://www.bestbuyautoequipment.com/2_Post_Lift_car_lift_vehicle_lift_s/285.htm
I have a Snap On scissor lift like the one in the first post. I love it! The only thing I can't do with it is exhaust or transmission work. Other than that it's great. I especially like that I can move it from one bay to the other. It is mobil, not something that is mounted that you have to work around in the garage. Good luck.
a friend of mine has one and hates it...if there isn't a car on it, it's in the way of using that bay space... i have this one...you can open both car doors with the car on the lift... ...used, rebuilt...came from a VW dealership...$1400 installed...
i have one like that at work. we also have rotary lifts which are nicer and a lot easier to set the lift arms. i feel much more comfortable under the rotary's working on big trucks
http://www.rotarylift.com/lifts_light.aspx the first one is the rotary i was talking about...but check out the second one on the list...pretty cool...mind u i have no idea of the price on any lift whatsoever
i saw one of these (2nd) at a tire place. it was stuck with the car about a foot off the floor...when they called the lift repair shop, they were told that they had to get the car off before they could repair the lift...they had 2 rollbacks there trying to figure out a plan... ...and as with the first one...transmission work... would be a little tricky...
and with anything...Saftey...is a must... Harold has had 2 of his 4 lifts fall. both were 4 post (presumed to be the safe ones)... one dumped a '66 mustang on it's side and the other one an LTD ford. also on one 4 post (drive on) Buddy took a tire off a truck to put a boot in it. he used a 1 leg stand under one side of the rear end. by letting the lift down it would raise the tire off the lift. when he was done and returned to put the tire back on, the lift had slowly leaked down and the truck was at about 45 degrees and on 2 wheels... rule of thumb...always set the lift on the locks...i don't always but i try to... ...:Handshake...
This one ends today...it's from the Government auction bidding is at $4450.00 now.....ends at 4 pm this afternoon.
why would trans work be iffy, the lift arms are outside, not under. it's like a regular lift but it's embedded in the ground
a transmission jack w/transmission on it needs a smooth surface to roll on... that grate under the car is not that... this one with the bar on the floor under it is also not transmission jack, tool box or roll around tool table friendly... ......
