Alright I have a 70 mav with a 302 and 3speed tranny out of a 71 grabber. Im running it with stock manifolds now but i am gonna put a cheap set of Hooker 6901's on her soon and decided to redo the entire exhuast. Preformance and sound wise what would be the best set up? I was just gonna do straight pipe off the headers to two glasspacks, but have heard good things about x pipes and such. So if you could help me out id appericiate it. thanks
If you do glasspacks back in duel exhaust fashion, their are 2 bolts where the axle is on the floor of the car you can hang some exhaust hangers from that. Easy as pie.
An X pipe or H pipe is a good idea. They help to equalize the pulses in the exhaust tract as well as aid scavenging a bit. They can be good for freeing up a few ponies too.2 1/2" pipe is good place to start size wise.As for mufflers, glass packs are ok but I would go with a good chambered muffler like, Flowmasters. You will need to decide if you want tail pipes or just turndowns after the mufflers.Tail pipes will make it a bit quieter.Good luck!!!
i didn't use the x pipe on mine. mine is 2.5 inch pipe into the mufflers (Flowmaster 40's), 2.25 out the back of the mufflers. over the back axle angled towards the ground. i LOVE IT!!!
This is what im looking at, not sure it will fit yet...http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PYE-XVX10/?image=large And a set of electric cutouts added just for fun...
Performance and sound are pretty subjective terms when it comes to exhaust. It comes down to personal choice. Some like the sound of flowmasters (I don't) Some like glasspacks (I used to) I've got 18" "Turbo Tubes" with angle cut extensions ending on either side of the rear chunk. All with Hedman long tube headers, 2-1/2" pipe with an X in the middle. It's damned loud too. But I like the raspy sound when I let off the gas. Listen to as many different mufflers as you can before making a choice. Performance and glasspacks really aren't synonomous, they create a lot of back pressure.
I have posted some Flowmaster Super44s set up like Matterick above. It is DAMNED loud, but if you want loud, it would be perfect for you. After driving it like that for 2 years, I know I will go with something quieter next time, and add an X-pipe. I really liked glasspaks exiting in front of the rear wheels. It was aggressive but not too loud. Same with my sidepipes which are basically glasspaks exiting in front of the rear wheels. I had to ditch the sidepipes because it was nearly impossible to use with headers (and X may have helped???) and then had to ditch the side exit glasspaks because they exited at my Caltracs. Maybe a couple of you guys need to post video or sound clips, or do a search to hear/see a couple.
My opion...2" - 2-1/4" pipe is all that is needed with a small block. Flowmasters sounds like the engine is straining just to pull off from a dead stop...Just listen to any late model Mustang. I like the sound of turbos or glass packs on an unbalanced system to have the old school sound. X-pipe is for wide open rpm like in NASCAR, H-pipe is better for under 6000 rpm.
i had 2" with 40s on mine. Loved it , sounded nothing like a late model stang. 4.6 engines sound different, to me at least.
Mine sounds MUCH like the first one. Before I fixed the fuel pump noise. Dual Super44 flowmasters on 2-1/2" no X or H, or L, M, N, or P! http://scooper77515.fordmaverick.net/jpgs/44outsidemp3.mp3 And one on the street from inside the car http://scooper77515.fordmaverick.net/jpgs/super44installed.mp3
My Falcon doesn't sound nothing like those http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/misc.php?do=downloadfile&i=9888
Posting a dyno run was not the purpose of the post. I was posting the sound so other members could hear the difference between a $30 set of turbos and a $160 set of Flowmasters on a small block Ford. The dyno run was the only clip I had small enough so anybody on dialup could download it without waiting hours to D/L a 60 meg file. What will really sound great is to have a camera from another car running next to you in the other lane shooting your car at 50-60 mph. I guess the wind niose might be an issue tho. :Handshake
