instead of buying a whole carb im thinking about buying a Holley main body instead and putting the parts from my other holley on it...... a whiile back some one told me that i could change the jet sizing so the carb wont soo much gas at one time....is this idea a good idea?
Whats wrong with the mainbody you have now? Jets are changeable on hollys, just not all of them have rear metering blocks, they have plates instead. Which you can remove the plate, install a block and then you will have 4 jets you can adjust.
My question is the same as AndyUtt, why? Are you looking for more CFM.........or? Give us a little more information as to your reasoning. Any carb can be made to flow more CFM. Here is a picture of an 850 Holley that has been reworked to flow 1030CFM to keep up with the 408ci motor and 15:1cr.
The only reason I can think of is going from a vac secondary carb to a double pumper. If he already had dual feed, dual metering blocks, but on a vacume secondary, he may want a double pumper. So this could be done cheaper than buying a while carb.
Better to buy the full carb that works with your application, too many other variables to the main body...air bleeds and base plates...my opinion is dont try unless you know a lot of tuning tricks!
Very well said... While I've tinkered with them quite a bit, I'm no expert, and I have enought spare parts laying around to build 3 or 4 carbs. But, if I need one for a daily driver and not a hot rod, I'll most likely just buy a new one
You're not going to use the vacuum secondary bowl to convert to a double pumper. It's not that simple. If he wants a double pumper carb, he needs to just buy one. he really needs to state exactly why he wants to change the main body first. The main body doesn't wear out, got to be another reason to need to change it.
the carb i have right now and dont want to use is a single pump 725 cfm holley i was lookin for the main bodie for a 650cfm single pump carb to see if i could adapt the metering blocks and base plate to it........not looking for a double pumper carb for my motor
I never said it was that easy. Im saying if he already had made his vacume secondary carb a dual feed/dual metering block carb then he could use those parts on a double pumper mainbody. But he'd still need the double pumper baseplate as well. If it was as simple as converting a bowl over, I'd of done it a long time ago. lol
You can just swap baseplates (if you get the right one) to your mainbody and it'll make it a a 650. The baseplates are swapable, but you have to make sure you use the right one and the right gasket in the kit. Otherwise it won't run right at all. I think in order to have dual metering blocks, you have to replace your side hung bowls with center hung bowls and make it a dual feed. Atleast when I built mine, I replaced with center hung bowls, and dual metering blocks, and a nice chrome dual feed inlet tube
