Engine is already fixed. I just bolted the rocker back in, but I think I will pull them all out and lock-tite them in before I do anymore cruising. I had 3 loose intake rockers when I got into it today, one was completely "off it's rocker" and laying below the valve spring.
Scooper I cant believe that you didnt figure out it was a u joint, I would have said something about it earlier. When ever I get a vibration that is the 1st thing I check, its a pretty small part that takes a beating Remember K.I.S.S Keep it simple stupid
The ujoints were brand new. Less than a year old and less than 400 miles on them, so I had no reason to look at them.
Yea. We don't fly airplanes, but some things do need to be looked at reealll close. And with the u-joint, who would think it would have two different size cups.
From now on, I KNOW it has two different sized cups. But I drove on those other ones (I think two different sets) for 4 years. O'Reilly even lists them as the correct size, so I replaced them early on thinking they were correct. And all these years I had convinced myself that that airplane drone was normal for our cars.
Another option for the rear Got the new u-joints on the drive shaft. O'Reilly's had the 280 joint for the front. The specs for the 430 joint were correct for the rear but they didn't have it and couldn't get it. They found an alternative -- Spicer 5-1201X -- with matching specs. Got it the next day, and it fits fine. A tip for installing: put the joints in the freezer before you try to install them. That way you can put the pressed-in caps about half way in with your fingers before you have to put the squeeze on them. Again, thanks for the heads up. Ya'll saved me a bunch of frustration.
Yes. The front caps are 1 1/16 all around but the rear has 1 1/16 in the drive shaft and 1 1/8 for the caps that go to the differential. Specs for front: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCN-280/ Specs for rear: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCN-430/ BTW, the replacement u-joints look much sturdier than the originals.
Freeze 'em and the caps will slip part way in -- enough to start straight and for the X to hold the needle bearings in place -- and press in a lot easier.
